p.1 #1 · Canon EF 100mm f/2.8l Macro Ring/Band Broken/Repair?
I have a Canon 100mm f/2.8l Macro that I picked up to use over the weekend. Somehow, the "ring/band" has broken. I've Photoshopped an image showing where the crack is on that piece. It fully comes off the lens if I pull on it.
Is this cosmetic or functional and has anyone ever had it replaced via Canon? I'm considering sending this off to Canon Professional Services along with a few other lenses. It's hard to find information on this piece but I've seen some reference that Canon fixes this by replacing the front element module? Seems like overkill?

Several years ago the samething happened to me about a month after I bought it new. It occurred when I was removing the hood from it's reversed position. I sent it in and they replaced the ring band and it never happened again.

Suppose that was under warranty though.

It is the little white line between "100mm" and "1:28 L"....Show more →
No real idea, doesn't look like much to me, i'm pretty bad about sending stuff in , though.
It looks like you could just apply model glue or a piece of tape, or just don't pull on it. May have suffered impact, though, so be sure to test it. If you pulled it off and its just a piece of plastic I'd think that tells you its more decorative?
You might check to see if it's scheduled to go out of service.

yeah, I know exactly the piece you’re talking about, that little plastic ring right between “100mm” and “1:2.8 L.” It’s a known weak spot on a few Canon L lenses, and unfortunately, it’s just cosmetic. Doesn’t affect image quality, focusing, or sealing at all. But yeah, it’s annoying to look at, especially if the rest of the lens is mint. You’re not the only one who’s had that ring crack or come loose either, so you’re definitely not alone here.

As for getting it fixed, Canon usually doesn’t just swap out that ring by itself. Most reports say they replace the whole front barrel assembly, which includes that piece, and that’s likely what you saw mentioned about the front element module. It does sound like overkill, but that’s how Canon tends to handle these things. Since you’re already planning to send other stuff to CPS, it might be worth tacking this on too just to get everything cleaned up at once.

I don't know if it's essential but it would bother me. If you bought it used, I'd try someone like KEH, Roberts or other shop to replace it. I didn't have a positive experience sending mine to the Virginia Service Center for an IS motor issue.
