I generally use one camera with a 400mm 2.8 from football end zones or sidelines and a second camera with a 24-120mm (Nikon Z8 or Z9). Same for baseball from first base or third base. I’ve had decent luck this way for a number of years and would recommend a Nikon 400/2.8 G lens to get started with because their prices have come down. I’m thinking about moving to one model newer 400mm myself so LMK if you are interested in the Nikon G model lens. David T

The 70-200 + 2.0 TC adds 2 stops so widest open is 5.6. Some were shot at f8 which is actually 3 stops. I would set the camera in manual to force f5.6 which would lower the necessary ISO. You should be able to get by with 1/1600 with the conditions seen in the soccer photos which would also lower the necessary ISO.

In general 2.0 TCs degrade IQ (usually 1.4 TCs aren't too bad). High amount of cropping further degrades sharpness. Action sports photography, especially under HS lit fields, requires fast glass i.e. 2.8 or better. Put a 400

The football photos were shot at f5.8, the soccer photos were shot at f8 because that's the sharpest range for the 2.0TC and the 70-200 and I had plenty of latitude with shutter speed during the day.

My curiousity is what level of improvement I'm going to get from a 400 2.8 versus the TC. I can't afford the z 400 2.8, but I'm wondering how a 400 2.8G would look versus the TC combo and if it's worth the $2500-$3000 it would cost to upgrade to that. I guess I KNOW the quality will improve, I just wonder if it's worth the cost if I'm not currently using photography as an income source. Hobbies are wonderful, right?

Yup, hobbies can have many levels from the perspective of the individual, be it IQ, expertise, equipment capability and of course $$$. How much better photos from a 400 look compared to a 2.0 TC's 70-200? IMO, there is no question they are, but throw in is it worth more $$$ and that becomes highly subjective and strictly a personal choice. It comes down to being satisfied and what it takes to get you there. Having said that, possession of capable equipment in only part of the equation. Having the knowledge / expertise to effectively utilize it to obtain expected results comes with considerable time honing the technique which requires mastering the variables involved.

If your are truly interested in potentially upgrading to this lens you might consider renting a 400 and determine what value it provides for your photography.
Yeah hobbies are wonderful, but some come with higher costs.

I shoot a Z8/120-300 mounted on an MH-100 head on my monopod with a Leofoto quick release plate. The camera/lens is secured to me with an Optech strap featuring two attachment points, one which goes to a QD on the lens foot, the other to a connector on a lens barrel lug. This way, as needed, I can either lay it across my neck, as others note, or simply drop the monopod off and dangle the camera while I grab my Z7ii/24-70 on a Peak Design Slide strap for closer action.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get or what model straps, etc, are you using for your QD set up? I'm currently using Peak Design connectors but there are situations I'd rather have a single connection point and QD sounds better than Rapid Straps. I currently have a BlackRapid set up as well, and I have it for a two-camera setup, but I don't like it for heavier cameras/lens setups.

This is the strap that I’m using:

OP/TECH USA Utility Strap – https://a.co/d/iwLaoUJ

For lighter set ups, I’m either using a Peak Design Slide on the body lugs, or my Holdfast Moneymaker harness for dual carries using QD connectors to the bottom of each body’s L bracket.
