p.1 #1 · Best way to move photos from SD card to external SSD?
What is the best way to move photos from SD cards to a portable SSD?
Is it necessary to use a computer to do this? If one does use a computer, is there a way to avoid having to first write the photos to the computer's hard drive before copying then to the external SSD?
Is there any software that speeds or facilitates this process?

No need to copy them to the computer.
Plug in the external SSD and it will show up as a drive (a bit different between Win and Mac), plug in the SD card and it will show up, then select images on the SD card (folders etc) using Win Explorer or Finder, and copy them, then paste them into the SSD wherever you want them.
The best way may be the way that suits your workflow best. I use the above method when travelling and using a Mac, and Photomechanic at home on my Windows machine. There are many other pieces of software that can semi-automate the ingest, and of course you can use LRC which will copy from an SD card to a location of your choice (including an external SSD).

Plug in the external, it shows as a drive, drag the images from the sd card to the drive, done.
My guess is your OS auto image viewer is opening and loading the images and this is confusing you. Close that and navigate to the card itself, drag the images on it to the drive, no need to view them on the computer.

Coincidentally, I watched a YouTube video yesterday that included an ad for UnifyDrive UT2 that mentioned the ability to copy memory cards directly to the drive, by plugging the cards into the dedicated slots on the drive.

Unless it doesn't bother you, use software that will copy the files without altering their datetime stamp at the destination device. Then they should be an exact copy.
Also, use (perhaps different) software that will verify the copies. That starts by calculating md5 or other file checksums on the source device and copying it/them along with the data files. Then reboot the computer to clear temporary caches held by the operating system. Then fire it up again and test the checksums from the destination device. Unless they fail the test, you can be confident that all files have been copied accurately and are readable, so no nasty surprises. They'll also be available for subsequent re-verification in future.
Then isolate the copy asap so they won't all get lost together if something goes wrong.
Maybe I'm just unlucky or maybe I've got some sort of aura, but I've had enough file copies go bad to warrant the creation and testing of the checksums.

Most of the data corruption we see is on external USB drives.
I do like checksums but if not available you can run a bytewise comparison between the two sets of data.
I use BreezeBrowser Pro to download image files to three targets at the same time (in the field a laptop with 2 internal and one external SSD). If I were only making one copy I might use a filesynch program instead.
