p.1 #1 · Goodbye, Nate

Congratulations to Ross Martin for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners

I had to say goodbye to my sweet old boy Nate tonight. For 17 years and 3 months he was the joy of our home, along with his brother Max who passed nine months ago. Nate was truly a best friend and the best daily companion, with a heart of gold. A week ago he was chasing two squirrels in our backyard despite having an eroded hip socket, then today after he wouldn’t eat for the last three days we learned he had an aggressive intestinal cancer. All of you who have loved a pet with all your heart understand how it feels, just crushes the spirit. But at the same time I am filled with gratitude - it was honor to care for this most excellent feline. I know the pain of loss is the price we pay to give and receive love.

These portraits were taken of Nate over many years, including several recent, and among the lenses were an old Nikkor 400mm f/3.5 ED-IF AIS manual focus, a Viltrox 135/1.8, and a Sony 50/1.2 GM.

Ah, so sorry for your loss my friend! Indeed the pain is great but the beauty of that love, given and received, is even greater. And the photos are truly beautiful...

Most excellent. One can never really adopt a cat, they adopt you.

About 30 years ago, when we first moved into our house, we had a neighbor that was the stereotypical 'spinster, cat lady.' She had an all white cat, that not long after, made frequent visits to check on us. Pretty soon, she started coming into the house, and then staying over. She finally made the decision to move in with us, and was the most wonderful companion until her passing. At night, she used to settle in up near my head, purring smoothly, like an old motorboat. After aclimating, her nightly song became a welcome and calming note to fall asleep to.

The loss of a "4 legged child" brings a grief I have never felt before Ross! The pleasure and love they bring to one's life cannot be explained with words.
They are eyes into the human soul and when they pass on to "the Rainbow Bridge" a piece of one's soul goes with them until we meet again!
I am so sorry!
Dan

All our children died from some sort of cancer!

@Ross Martin

Sorry about your loss. Cats are whimsical creatures and they sorta kinda sneak up on you emotionally, unlike other pets. We had to put down our cat two years ago (due to cancer and at 17 years, just like Nate). Based on your captures, appears that Nate was truly blessed with a heart of gold and in turn blessed your family for a long time.

I am so sorry that your lost your boy Nate, Ross. Pets are so much more than just pets - they are family and are both the givers and receivers of tremendous love and companionship. Thank you for sharing photos of him. He was a very handsome boy and his personality comes shining through.

We had to put down our older and beloved boy Bergen 10 days ago, so I understand very well what you are going through. After trying to help Bergen for over a year without any certain knowledge of the source of his health issues, he too stopped eating. The vet said that it was probably a diffuse type of cancer that does not show up on blood test results. We do as much for them as we can, including not letting them suffer.

Love that story, Dave. Yes, those nighttime cuddly purrs are the best. Thanks for sharing that.

So sorry for your loss! When you are ready, get a pair of littermates. They will entertain you constantly, and have each other for comfort when you are not there.

@3catsinky

That's we ended up doing. We now have two litter mates and are all in a better place after the loss of our first cat.

Thank you so much, Scott. I always figured from your user name and avatar that you were a cat person. Totally agree about littermates. Nate was a littermate with his brother Max from 2008 and they were an amazing pair! Max passed 9 months before his brother (pictured below).

@Ross Martin

, the last photo of your black cat looks exactly like Sebastian, our cat who passed. That was his favorite resting pose. Brings back good memories. Thanks for sharing. Not to derail your thread on Nate, but this was Sebastian on Halloween.

p.1 #18 · Goodbye, Nate

It's incredibly heartbreaking to hear about Nate, Ross. Seventeen years and three months is a beautiful, long life, and it's clear he filled every one of those days with immense joy for you and your family. The image of him chasing squirrels just a week ago, despite his hip, really speaks volumes about his spirit and how much he loved life with you.

Losing a pet, a true member of the family like Nate, is an unbearable kind of pain. Your words, "just crushes the spirit," resonate deeply with anyone who's loved an animal with their whole heart. It's truly the price we pay for such profound love, as you so eloquently put it.

But amidst the grief, it's wonderful to hear you're also filled with gratitude for the honor of caring for such a "most excellent feline." Nate was so lucky to have you, and it sounds like he lived a life full of love, adventure, and companionship right up until the end. Hold onto those cherished memories of his golden heart and all the joy he brought.

Sending you so much comfort during this incredibly difficult time.

Lovely set
