p.1 #1 · New firmware for R5 II 1.1.0

There should be one for other cameras as well (10 cameras getting the password update).

https://hk.canon/en/support/0401061202?model=6536C

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Improves security features. A password must be set initially.
•Adds the ability to review the history of any changes made to the password, network information, or other settings.
*For more information, please refer to the 'Setting a Password' section in the Advanced User Guide on cam.start.canon.
2. Enables firmware updates to be performed when the camera is connected to the internet and new firmware is made available on Canon servers.
3. Adds the ability to automatically detect Flicker at 100 or 120 Hz during Live View display.
4. Adds the ability to register focus position as a presets on the CR-A100 Camera Remote Application. This ability makes it easier to focus on subjects at the intended distance when the application is used with Robotic Camera System CR-S700R.
5. Adds the ability to select [Case Special] to expand Servo AF characteristics which is effective for subjects located behind a net in sporting events, such as badminton or volleyball.
6. Adds support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI).
7. Adds a function that simultaneously protects images when they are rated.
8. Improves image stabilization control for lenses compatible with Peripheral Coordinated Control.
9. Adds support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI).
10. Adds to lower the image capture frame rate to help prevent overheating when connected to CR-A100 in extended remote shooting.
11. When transferring images with voice memos via FTP, the transfer order priority has now changed with voice memo (Wav) file being sent first followed by image file.
If a voice memo is added to an image queued for transfer, the image and voice memo are now sent last.
12. Adds the ability to set the number of shots captured in pre-continuous shooting mode.
13. Adds the ability to set [Airplane mode] to shooting button customization.
14. Adds the ability to enable [Exposure Simulation] when a flash unit is attached.
15. Improved AF tracking during video capture for subjects that are difficult to focus on.
16. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur when enlarging an image after shooting with [Blackout-Free Display] set to "On" and [Servo 1st image priority/One-Shot AF release priority] set to "Release priority".
17. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur during Bluetooth communication due to interference from other Bluetooth devices.
18. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur when repeatedly shooting in the "High-speed continuous shooting +" mode.
19. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur immediately after startup when shooting with the electronic shutter.
20. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur during video recording in "FHD239.8P/200.0P".
21. Fixes an issue in which Error 70 may occur while filming in video mode with frame rate set to "50.00P" and [Movie Digital IS] set to "On" or "Enhanced".
22. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur during shooting when both [Pre-recording] and [Auto send] to image.canon are set to "Enable".
23. Fixes an issue in which the camera may stop functioning properly when [Image Review] is set to "Off" and the monitor entered low brightness mode after pre-continuous shooting.
24. Fixes an issue in which video recording may not be possible when using Remote Live View shooting in EOS Utility while outputting via HDMI.
25. Fixes an issue in which large RAW image files may not be transferred via Camera Connect.
26. Fixes an issue in which a horizontal line may appear momentarily in the viewfinder.
27. Fixes an issue in which the camera may not connect to Wi-Fi 7-compatible routers.

Yeah I'm loading it as we speak. I don't feel I'll bother with the password hassles.

Some good stuff in there. For me, #5 and #12 look very interesting.

No mention of the battery issue though.

As usual, I'm in no hurry and will let other folks be the guinea pigs/beta testers while I wait to hear if there are any new problems that would impact me.

I wonder if #12 is pre or post? Hopefully pre. Some cameras have the option to set the post # which I find useless for wildlife as you want to keep shooting as long as you need to.

Canon's precapture is confusing. I was so confused at first as most reviews claimed the camera was doing 0.5s fixed precapture. But this was incorrect and it was actually a fixed 15 shot precapture. Reviewers thought it was 0.5s because they all tested at 30FPS. Shoot at 15FPS and you get 1s (15 shots) etc.
So because Canon seems to use # of shots logic and not time logic, this new option probably is for the pre release shot number. So hopefully now you can set it to say 10 shots, shoot at 30FPS and get approximately 0.3s of precapture which in my testing is ideal for my reaction time and would save me 5 useless images on every shutter release.

That's the way I'm reading it. I noticed in the R1 update listing is says it slightly differently. Which would be ideal.

"The number of shots recorded during pre-continuous shooting can now be set in single increments."

Pre-continuous shooting adjustment (1-20 frames, EOS R1; 1-15 frames, EOS R5 Mark II)

Can't test it out yet. Canon pulled the FW. Found issues with 2TB plus videos.

https://x.com/dc_watch/status/1945745311911325906?t=aoHn0TTTDfTEDwKdIwHM6w&s=19

After applying Version 1.1.0, it was confirmed that when shooting a movie with a pre-recording setting using a card larger than 2TB, it could not be played back on the camera or computer. The cause is currently being investigated. Users who have already downloaded the firmware are also urged to refrain from updating.

How about the focus issues. Those who downloaded did it help with the focus and tracking etc. that has been wonky since the last firmware update?

I DL'd but didn't install. I don't have a 2TB card but I also don't feel like risking it all lol

I'm happy to play guinea pig. So far the focus is much the same....great. I don't have a 2tb card just a 512gb card so I don't anticipate issues. I'll wait for them to update this firmware if needed. I'll let you know if I run into any issues. I thought the S mode added to the focus choices for shooting through fences was interesting.

I really hope they don't take too long to re-issue an updated version with the 2TB support (which, if it was truly the main known bug, wouldn't affect me as I don't have 2TB cards). Because this does fix some things I've been experiencing, and/or improvements I'd look forward to trying. Specifically:

It's now beach volleyball season
5. Adds the ability to select [Case Special] to expand Servo AF characteristics which is effective for subjects located behind a net in sporting events, such as badminton or volleyball.

Will help me shooting wildlife & BIF not just eat through a ton of card memory
12. Adds the ability to set the number of shots captured in pre-continuous shooting mode.

I wouldn't say my video AF tracking has been bad, but I'll welcome any improvements as I use my R5ii about 40% of the time for video
15. Improved AF tracking during video capture for subjects that are difficult to focus on.

Got my first Err70 while shooting hummingbirds (both H+ and 4K120 and 2K240 videos a couple of weekends ago, and it was caused by either of these)
18. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur when repeatedly shooting in the "High-speed continuous shooting +" mode.
20. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur during video recording in "FHD239.8P/200.0P".

Not sure if this is referring to that horizontal white line (about 1 pixel thick) that can occasionally show up at the bottom of my EVF...doesn't affect my ability to take photos or videos, but would be nice to be rid of it.
26. Fixes an issue in which a horizontal line may appear momentarily in the viewfinder.

I did manage to DL the Windows updater for it before they took it down, but I'm a little gunshy right now. I do have two R5iis so I could sacrifice one as I have no paid gigs coming up...but I'm just a little hesitant. I'll wait a week and monitor the experiences of those who did do the update right away. I'm sure there's a few of them out there since this was an anticipated release and several photography websites reported it was happening today.

Really excited about that. Looking forward to upgrading, and hope they fix whatever new issue they caused quickly!

p.1 #17 · New firmware for R5 II 1.1.0

I have lost track of firmware updates. My priorities are/were: i) reliability near freezing, ii) older batteries working (better), iii) (much lower priority to me) higher frame rate on video for slow mo (with older batteries).

I am focussed on landscape and big mammal photography, with occasional birds. I have focussed on travel and am moving into my backpacking season and have not paid attention to updates.

The only interesting feature mentioned in the update is being able to set the number of frames in precapture - but I don't think I am likely to use it because the real challenge for me is that at 30fps, culling is so much work even without this new feature, thus culling a bit more on an already culling example needs more of a software fix (better Lightroom than camera).

I have mostly used my r5 lately even though I have the R5ii because - its has better very high ISO performance for wildlife, it has better iso performance for stills, it is more reliable in the cold near zero, it uses all of my (old) batteries, and I would lose less if someone steals it or it drops in the water. And when backpacking I have used my r8 for lessor weight. I am going to shoot whales and otters next week and will be in the debate (precapture, more fps, slightly better af vs less to lose if I dump it in the ocean off my kayak).

There is no mention of my biggest issues i) cold weather performance, and ii) use of older batteries in this release. Have they fixed this in previous updates? Fall keeps getting closer.

Duade (birder) [good reviewer] says:

- downloaded prior to pause
- okay with password but will turn it off because it delay fast shooting (me too and I am sceptical that it would discourage stealing)
- settable frames pre capture useful to him, but he would prefer more frames than 15 as well
- no noticeable changes for him in a couple of days of usage - and he tried it in the grass and lost focus on foreground grass on occasion, just like the previous version - but still okay with R5ii as is
[- 'Ordinary Film Makers says that when tested above 2tb, with Anglebird card, the camera temporarily bricks but given the release was paused for above 2tb, this is an extreme test, but it implies that people wanting great than 2tb, might want to wait a bit of time for others to try, even after the new firmware is re - released.]
