p.1 #2 · Samyang 16mm f/2.8 P FE and 85mm f/1.8 P FE lenses
I just saw the Christoper Frost review and that MFD performance of the 85mm is seriously disappointing. I'm looking to add a cheap 85mm and was hoping this would be it.
The FE85 1.8 never vowed me. The photos are seriously boring and there's something about the rendering I really don't like. The Viltrox has smoother bokeh

Ok, before I start this rather negative post I must just say that I have the Samyang f1.8 24, 35, 45 and 75 mm lenses plus the 35/2.8. All of those I think are really nice, small and light and not very expensive. Perfect lenses for my A7CII (for serious work I use f1.4 glass on A7RV).
The new Sammy 16 mm, also in a Frost review, showed a surprisingly nice sunstar at around f16 but the bad flare resistance killed it. So no go there. Pitty, the really close MFD was promising.
Regarding the new 85: Did we really need another 85?
Since Samyang Optics reinvented themselves into LK Samyang, they have made rather odd lens releases I think. And still no sign of the 20/1.8 and 100/2 as photography versions.

IMO f/2.8 primes under 200mm are kinda pointless if you can afford a f/2.8 zoom
This 16/2.8 is no exception
I agree in general, and I own the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 II
But there are times I would like to try something different with a wider angle, and I don't want to carry another zoom lens for that. Having a very compact and light wide prime that I always have in my photo backpack is tempting.

I think this is going to be of great interest to @snegron7 who had expressed regret about the lack of a 16mm f/2.8 lens in the Sony system while the Canon RF system has one (though I suspect that as far as image quality goes, this Samyang will simply crush the Canon lens).

I watched the review from DA yesterday and the flare looked good. However the vignetting even at f/5.6 is not great. It still can be a good option for a very compact 16mm, once the profile is available in LR. Not at $500 though.

What's disappointing about the MFD performance? 0.80m is exactly the same MFD as every similar 85mm fast portrait lens. The Samyang is a really simple optical design similar to the Sony f/1.8 lens. I'm not surprised if needs to be stopped down a bit to get maximum contrast at MFD. That's not what it's designed for.
Are you comparing the Samyang performance to the Sony GM II? That lens has 50% more glass in it and cost 5x as much! I hope it performs a little better.
Given the small size and low cost, I'd say Samyang did a very impressive job.
