This news made me incredibly sad when I heard it this morning. I had planned on heading that way next month for monsoon photography. I guess I will cherish memories of the trips I've made there.
It's awful news. The feeling one got when looking out from that beautiful lodge, with its timbers framing the canyon, was beyond description.
I keep reminding myself that nobody was hurt or killed, and that matters so much more than the building--even a building as old and grand as that lodge. But I'm still really bummed.
Is anyone optimistic the place will be restored? I'd like to be, but am not.
It is hard not to be pessimistic. Regardless of your political beliefs, we have a President who is not an environmentalist, shows no interest in preserving wild places, and continues to cut manpower and budgets for the NPS.

Anyone sufficiently motivated has complete agency over this problem

Compared to what? The previous President who offered each family $700 after the Maui Wildfires? It's also a bit of a coincidence that all these wildfires as of late have happened under the watch of the political party the current president is not part of.
$80/year is a pittance for the value received. And at least 99% of the members of this forum can afford to at least double that.
I've had a National Park Pass since moving to AZ in 2006. When I became disabled I was able to get a lifetime free pass. But as you say. That $80. a year is well worth the weight in gold. Even more so. Even a day pass is good for 7 days. VS an AZ State Park Pass....
I've looked at getting an AZ State Park Pass also recently. How much? $200 a year with no discounts for disabled people. A one day pass is $10. the last time I checked. I have two state parks close to me, both about a 45-60 minute drive away in Camp Verde and Cottonwood. I don't go to them often enough to warrant a yearly pass. So I'd rather just pay the $10.
