p.1 #1 · Light Lens Lab - Experience - Quality Issues

Hello,

I’ve been really impressed with the beautiful image quality of Light Lens Lab (LLL) lenses.

However, I wanted to share some feedback from my experience with five of their lenses —feedback that doesn’t quite align with the “high-quality photographic equipment” messaging of LLL or some reviews suggesting Leica/Voigtlander-level build quality.

Here’s what I encountered:

* LLL 50 mm f/1.2 (1966 vintage): I experienced noticeable play in the focusing mechanism and a distinct clicking sound when turning the focus ring from one direction to the other. I sent it to LLL Canada for repair (at my expense), waited for service in China, and while it was partially improved, the issue wasn’t fully resolved. By comparison, my Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1.2 focuses smoothly and silently.

* LLL 35 mm 8-element (regular black paint finish): After just mounting and unmounting the lens hood, the black paint began chipping. My older Leica and Voigtlander lenses —some over 60 years old — haven’t shown this issue.

* LLL 28 mm 9-element: This lens stuck several times and can’t get off the M Body (maybe a LLL mount tolerance issue on that lens) and I was concerned about damaging the rangefinder coupling mechanism on my M. The first replacement LLL sent had a front housing ring that wasn’t glued properly and could rotate freely. Only the third lens I received functions reliably. I covered shipping costs for both faulty lenses.

* LLL 50 mm Rigid: This one has been flawless and performs beautifully!

* LLL Z21 (just received): Unfortunately, it has a strong back-focus issue out of factory— at infinity, the rangefinder patch won’t align, making the lens unusable on a rangefinder. I tested it on multiple M bodies, and it’s definitely faulty.

Out of the seven lenses I’ve received (including replacements), five had issues — an error rate of around 71%.

David and the LLL customer service team have always been friendly and responsive, for which I’m grateful.

Still, the cumulative effort — time, money, and frustration — has taken a toll on my confidence in their product’s quality, reliability, and longevity. In many countries, there’s also no local distributor or service partner, which makes the situation more difficult.

I want to highlight something important: I truly value the distinct, beautiful rendering of these lenses — otherwise, I wouldn’t have continued buying them. They’re also more affordable than Leica lenses, and aimed at comparable price performance levels to Voigtlander. But when prices range from €700 to €2,100 for a LLL lens, customers rightfully expect matching build quality.

Adding to the challenge, I haven’t received any personal response to my recent Z21 complaint/warranty issue for almost two weeks from LLL — only an automated reply:

“Hello, Dear valued customer,
There will be a delay in our email replies as we are away from our desk... However, we will still receive your messages and reply to you as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank you for understanding and supporting our research and development.”

My Z21 is unusable and just sitting on the shelf, and I hope LLL will react to my emails and get back to me soon and provide a solution for the defective lens.

I sincerely hope LLL can address these quality control issues in their small-batch production and more important, improve the responsiveness of their service. Other manufacturers do experience occasional hiccups, sure — but they often have local support and are easier to reach.

Thank you for reading, and I’d be happy to stay in touch and provide updates.

Best regards,

Guenther

I have five LLL so far I have been fortunate- all purchased through Popflash, I think Tony checks them before sending them out because all five are good. When/if I want more I will be happy to go back to Popflash since I have 100% good so far.

I have a 1966 (Black paint), 50/2 Elcan (black paint), Rigid (black paint), SPII Rigid (chrome), 28 Elmerit (black paint) I used all of them quite a bit, posted some Elcan shots here on FM and I have been happy with my LLL lenses. The first three I used a lot, the second two much less. Since none have stood the test of time, will they still be good classic lenses 10 years from now, like a Leica might be expected to be I'd don't know. I remain undecided if I want the Z21, the 35 mm F1.4 double asph to come might be more my thing, I can only use so many character lenses, and I have others I use on other cameras actual vintage glass right now I am UV treating a nice zeiss thorium pancolor to adapt to a nikon, almost cleared of yellow....

I don't think he actually opens the box or inspects the lenses. He definitely doesn't check for rangefinder accuracy...that's just a myth in my opinion. I think you just got lucky!

Personally, I've also had good luck overall, except when it comes to focus rotation play. About half of my Light Lens Lab lenses have a bit of it. It's never excessive, but just enough to be a little annoying. That said, the Z21 I received is spot-on with the rangefinder, and the same goes for the 35/2 8E Titanium and the 50/1.2 1966 version.

Aside from Leica, Cosina is the only other manufacturer I've found to have consistently tight production tolerances. It's rare to feel any play in their lenses, and the focusing is usually very smooth...though not always perfectly accurate with the rangefinder.

I have had similar experience. 2 lenses focus stiction and play issues. Popflash said YYE was the factory US service, but then I inquired and YYE
said he stopped servicing because they did not support him. I guess I would consider them a value replica lens, way less then the originals but essential non serviceable.

I seems that LLL needs a reliable service center. They look to be trying to be a serious player in lens and maybe film. Even if their US service center is simply a receiving center to send to China and stage manage service, or that is what I would suggest. So far I am good but luck can run out. I was out this morning with my MP + LLL 1966 being in a film mood.

For anyone looking to get their LLL lenses CLA'd, I've had a great experience with Jadon Rosado. It was recommended by LLL to me.

I've sent him both the 50/2 Panchro II and the 35/2 8-element in the past, and he completely fixed the focus play, RF alignment and stiff rotation issues. It took a couple of months, but it was definitely worth it.

As far as I know, neither Don at DAG nor Youxim services these lenses.

I'm quite pedantic with photography equipment, especially when talking about rangefinder stuff for its fundamental nature of meticulous mechanical tolerances.

That said, I recognize many of the points you mentioned, despite I'm not suffering from them. I have Speed Panchro II and Z21 from LLL lens line-up.

Things I found in common:

* I have to be very precise when mounting SP II to M camera. The lens mount has to be perfectly perpendicular to the body and you can actually turn it over the point where the lens can be mechanically pulled out. The "teeth" on the lens can turn too far and get caught to the mount tabs on the bayonet in the camera body. Z21 expresses the same behaviour but only very slightly. I have never had any lens stuck on the camera.

* I have a little play in the focusing mechanism of SP II, and in addition, the rotation of the focusing ring is not even over the whole focus throw. It smoothens out almost completely after using it for a while, so I tend to just rotate it a few times back and forth when attaching it to the camera. This is more noticeable in cold weather (especially winter time when it can get pretty cold here where I live). No play nor unevenness in Z21.

* I have tested rangefinder accuracy on both lenses using a A4 size focusing chart and focusing in 30, 45 and 60 degree angles from minimum focusing distance to around two meters away, wide open and stopped down. Both lenses can be focused accurately in close distances using rangefinder and SP II tends to back-focus a very minuscule amount when stopped down. Focusing to infinity does not align the rangefinder patch on neither of the lenses but the picture is sharp and in-focus at mechanical hard stop of infinity. I'm not completely sure but I think all my Voigtländer lenses do align the patch at infinity. This is more of a nuisance than defect in my opinion. Focusing past the infinity would be bad. I'm not sure how it affects on moderate focusing distances, though. If there is some inaccuracy, with this focal length, it will be very forgiving just by looking at the resulting photos even with a high megapixel sensors (Z21 covers nicely medium format sensor, too).

Overall, these are unique lenses in terms of rendering and paying respect to ridiculously rare and expensive famous vintage lenses. I am more than happy with these nevertheless the imperfections or deficiencies I have yet experienced with them. Hopefully I don't get any major issues with them. That said, I do share with you a tiny bit of the lack of confidence while these problems are reported in not one in hundred thousand but rather few in thousand units of these lenses.

I had an issue with my ELCAN where the front element started twisting off on its own. I got it fixed relatively quickly.

Between my

SP II / 8-Elements / ELCAN, the ELCAN was the only one with an issue.

I heard similar issues with focusing on the Z21.
