Both tracked my route while the iPhone was locked and in my pocket.
While GPS Tracks has a better looking user interface, you need to pay a yearly subscription for the Pro version to be able to email the track information.
GPSLoggerS is pretty basic, but emailing the track information is part of the free app. It will save the information as CSV and/or KML file types.
And is also has an app, GPSLoggerS Tracks, for MacOS so you can see the track information on a Mac.
They both use a lot of battery, though. It's interesting that there is no Background Application Refresh on/off for GPSLoggerS
but GPS Tracks does.
I think I will stick with the GPSLoggerS as a backup to Canon Connect....Show more →
Thanks for this.
While I think I know the answer, does either app require a data connection for the logging to function? I have an old iPhone as a secondary phone and would consider installing GPSLoggerS on it to leave in the camera bag to run without a SIM installed or active. I mean, I know I can get current GPS coordinates on Google Maps when I'm on a flight in airplane mode, for example, so thinking this should also work with a logger. And I could try it myself, but maybe someone here already knows the answer.

I can't comment on those particular apps, or any other iPhone GPS logging apps, but I can say I successfully used GPS Logger on Android phone(s) for years with a cheap prepaid plan that did not include a data plan, so it is technically possible.

Good question. I tried GPSLoggerS in Airplane Mode just around my house and it appeared to work, but Monday I've got errands to run and I'll try it for real then.
I did some more testing around my backyard, I have 3 acres, and GPSLoggerS seems to be working just fine in airplane mode, so I'm assuming it will also work if there is no SIM card installed.
That's good to know, the next time I'm on a driving trip to places without cell coverage.
Another cheap option would be to just use an old gps sports watch like a Garmin Fenix/Forerunner or a FitBit band. Start a walking-activity and export the data at home on the computer. Just make sure that the watch and the camera show the same time and timezone. I wouldn't want to drain my iPhones battery when I'm abroad or in the back country.
