When I use my Z8 and Z9 for auto focus shift macro shots or product focus stacking I cannot see the subject in the viewfinder during shooting the stack. This is because the view switches to a standard acquision boilerplate for the duration of the focus shift session.
I note that this feature of seeing the subject focus shifting in the viewfinder is available on OM Systems bodies. It’s very useful while shooting an insect on a plant to watch the process to check that the entire subject is covered by the range of in-focus shots and where the oof starts and stops.
Is there a Nikon Z8/9 menu setting that would allow me to see through the viewfinder what I’m shooting during the shifts?
The original Z6 and Z7 have the ability to display a "peaking stack image" after the focus shift series is done. They will do an in-camera stack and display a black-and-white image with the areas in focus displayed as white. I don't think any Nikon Z cameras since have that feature.

I never look through the viewfinder at the image being stacked. Can you not extend the range so that you will have enough frames to stack later?

It must be really hard to compose your image that way - especially if you're shooting hand-held.
