p.1 #1 · Duracel alkaline batteries - as bad as you can get

I needed 1.5v button cells in a pinch, and bought some Duracel branded ones as nothing else was available.
Silver oxide would have been my choice.
When I don't use a camera I always take the batteries out. This Duracel one exploded in storage:

You can see from the swelling of the other one it is about to pop.

They used to be good. I stopped buying Duracell AA and AAA last year. About 20% of them would corrode-out before use, years ahead of their 'best before' dates.

I see a Chinese Energizer A76 about to rupture. How is Duracell involved?
Try to buy from reputable suppliers as there are various manufacturing sites within brands.

They are a mix of Duracell, Energizer and no-names.

For some reason it is really hard to find real silver oxide button cells.

I just returned my second AA multi pack of Duracells to Costco. 10 year shelf warranty. After maybe one year a bunch had started to leak in package.

This never used to happen in my experience. But now I expect it.

Why do you need silver oxide cells rather than alkaline or lithium (if a 2-stack)?

My AAs are almost all eneloops. Nickel chemistry. I have a hunch that the alkaline batteries are the only ones that tend to leak or blow up. I almost never use alkaline batteries, from any manufacturer, for that reason.

I have about a hundred Eneloops (enough to populate four 600EX-RT flash plus four external battery packs, plus spares for each (4 x 4 + 4 x 4) x2 = 64, plus extras. The only thing I don't like about the Eneloops, is they slowly swell over time. Now, none of my Eneloops fit in my steel-tube three-AA-battery flashlight, but new Energizer AAs do fit (the Eneloops used to fit, too). Also, some new generic AA batteries don't fit, either. This suggests they are made to a different requirement for finished-diameter, or they have swelled since manufacture, and/or poor manufacturing control.

Some of my cameras need two button cells side by side so I can’t use ‘2-stack’ batteries.
Silver oxides are a far better option than alkaline but for some reason are very hard to get.

Bunch of times I have bought online batteries claimed to be silver oxide, but alkaline are shipped…

Do they need the constant voltage or just the capacity? Have you considered 675 zinc air cells? They need air and don't last long once activated, but are cheap in bulk.

I doubt there is enough market left to keep making the silver batteries.

"I don't always use alkaline batteries, but when I do..."

I prefer not to use Costco's Kirkland brand. Leaky, poor service life.

I have found them to be the same as Duracell.

After cleaning out too many battery compartments, I switched all my AAs and AAAs to EBL rechargeable lithium cells.

I just had to buy a new BT keyboard because I forgot to remove the batteries during a prolonged period of inactivity. See pic above.

Here's the weird thing. I have never had alkaline battery issues until the recent past. It seems batteries were made better in the past - or their chemistry was more stable. And I've been using batteries for a long time as I am as old as dirt.

Now mfgs off shore their battery production to whoever can make it the cheapest, quality be d@mned.

Same. I'm using Ikea for low demand stuff.

Same here. I've been using Copper Tops since the late seventies.

I had batteries in the battery pack of my F6 cook off just like what you showed in the image you posted, I ended up having to ship it off for repair and cleaning. Seeing how common this is makes me reconsider how long I should wait before swapping batteries.

The thing is, they never used to be like this. Obviously the quality of these batteries has completely tanked.

They absolutely have. In the past, I would see stuff like this if I'd left batteries in a device for decades, but before the end of service life? Never.
