You could practically hear the EOS 1v at 50 yards. The 1v with booster was the loudest camera ever and I used it from 2001-2003 until ditching film for digital.

Planned obsolescence would be a sealed-in battery that can't be replaced or features that stop working after a few years. Digital cameras do nothing of the sort. Everyone is free to decide if the next version is worth their money. My R6 works as well as the day I bought it, but the Mk2 would work better. It just hasn't been worth the cost, at least to me.

From Thom Hogan-"Planned obsolescence is a business strategy in which the obsolescence (the process of becoming obsolete, that is, unfashionable or no longer usable) of a product is planned and built into it from its conception, by the manufacturer.”

In other words, the camera manufacturers have a compulsion to convince you that the camera you have needs to be replaced by the new one they're making, even though your old camera takes perfectly fine photos. When the obsolescence is mostly rhetorical, this is often called esthetic obsolescence: obsolescence because something appears out of date, not necessarily because it is.”

Simply look at the waste generated by iphones and other electronics. It’s well documented that these companies are simply looking at long term sales to convince us we need the latest and greatest. The new R6MKII has a 15ms faster readout than the R6. Yes, something most video shooters definitely need. I’m not begrudging those who choose to upgrade to the R6MKII, my initial point was that as a stills shooter. I don’t really notice the upgrade for how I shoot and the QC wasn’t what the original R6 is. I don’t read most manuals because I go through every setting and program as needed. I read the Leica SL2-S manual because I was unfamiliar with their UI and initial setup, I been shooting the R6 for several wedding seasons and only shoot in manual mode. That’s how I prefer to shoot. What also interesting is that a new Canon MKII sells here on FM new for close to a used R6. I am probably going to try the MKII again as I know, cameras and lenses can be shipped without a lot of packaging to protect the electronics. Canon’s R6 packaging is awful compared to custom foam fitted cameras like Leica. BH, Adorama, etc., has sent me some items in an oversized shipping box with an air pillow and the camera basically just slams around, so if a sensor or lens element is askew, it might not necessarily be the manufacture's fault. But I still am perplexed at so called upgrades. I’m all for firmware upgrades to upgrade a camera usability though. It’s cheaper too!

Four or five photographers were shooting a rare scene of a N. Pygmy Owl devouring a Yellow Warbler with their mirrorless cameras silent-shutter mode, when along came an owner of a Nikon D850 who started shooting with his loud machine gun that immediately sent the owl flying off. The four or five mirrorless shooters were not impressed with the D850 guy.

For wildlife photographers and for indoor event photographers, silent shooting is one of the greatest benefits of electronic shutters in cameras.

I had not owned the R6 so I can't comment on the experience of upgrading to the R6 mk2. Starting with the RP at launch (2019) I was waiting for something significantly better and the R6 had not really appealed to me despite IBIS and a much better sensor among other attributes. Relative to the R6 the R6 mk2 introduced the new generation of lower battery consumption mirrorless cameras, as well as a new sensor with a few more pixels (R6's 20 MP was a tad on the low side), the half-second buffer for burst shooting, and improved AF. Also the new accessory shoe, not that I have used it so far. I don't do much video so I can't comment on the evolutions for that usage.

'A skilled photographer is able to use only the features he wants to on the newest models, and has the smarts to just ignore the other extra features. And the best-built camera does not equal the best output of images.'

This really resonated with me as I stepped up to an r5ii and an r1 over the past year. there are some features that apealed to my shooting needs/style yet many bells and whistles left unexplored. At times Ive had FMO that I dont use all features but have to remind myself that both cameras have become instinctive to use without much thought and thats most important to me so the gear gets out of my way...

I think a problem is that the newer generations of birds are not accustomed to the mirror/shutter camera sounds since too many people use the MILS lately.
