p.1 #1 · Best lens hood for the Canon RF 100-500mm F/4,5-71.1 L IS USM? //rhetorical
Now, when the hottest part of my life with the 200-800 has cooled a bit, I have used my 100-500 with the ES-83 hood instead of that horrible half-barrel-sized (oil barrel) original hood.
The ES-83 is the original hood for the RF 50mm F1.2 L USM. It is barely wider than the 100-500, short and nice to fit in my Peli 1450.
And best of all, despite using it in the harshest of lights out on the snow covered sea ice, in aluminium boats and so on, I have not found the ES-83 inadequate for the job. On the contrary, it does great!
As handiness is one among many Best in Show characteristics of the 100-500, the ES-83 is the way to go for the ultimate experience.

I use the RF 200-800 more than the RF 100-500, but I agree that ES-83, original hood for the RF 50mm F1.2, is the best hood for 100-500. And also for RF 70-200 f4!
Happy shooting

Are you having a problem with the hood? The regular Canon hoods have worked fine for me on 5+ copies of the 100-500. It's not like the tripod mount ring that sucks.

I didn't care for the white hood, so I bought a JJC LH-83D on Amazon for $18.95 and it works like a champ. (States it's for an EF100-400, but it fits perfectly on the RF100-500)

Do you have a lens coat on your 100-500? If so, does this third-party hood fit well when in the reversed (storage) position?
I don't use any form of lens coat, but I can offer the Hood dimensions as applicable to the lens if it helps.
(1) This hood alone, extends out about 3/8" more than the Canon original.
(2) When reversed the the edge of the hood is even with the front of the Adjustment Ring, and protrudes outward from the lens barrel 7/16" all around.
(3) The widest diameter at the front is 4 & 7/16"
