p.1 #1 · Buy used X2D + zoom now? Or wait?

Hi all! I have been eyeing medium format for a while. A local deal showed up for a barely used X2D with an XCD 35-75mm zoom for $9000 total with no sales tax. With the X2D ii around the corner wonder if the deal is worth it or wait for prices once mk ii is out.

December isn't really "around the corner" if you have lots of shooting opportunities this summer and fall that the X2D would be suited for. That said, if you just have GAS, wait it out.

9K is a nice deal for that set for sure, but I'd imagine we will see X2D bodies for 5K soon enough!

Thank you Scott!
We are attending a wedding in Hawaii this summer, that’s one of the reasons to do it now; however, would have to drive a few hours to get it. A medium format is my bucket list landscape format

I am not a fan of the XCD 35-75, it is just too heavy (for me). IQ is stellar for a zoom. I sold it due to the weight.

$9,000 for both X2D and the 35-75 is a good deal. I assume there is no sales tax on top of this price. If you don't keep the 35-75, ie, you sell it, your net for the X2D would be around $6,000 - not bad at all.

If I had a compelling need for the X2D, I would get it now and not wait for the new version. I got my X2D two weeks after release as I was going to Colorado for a fall trip - no regrets as it was one of those trips that I can't easily replicate and the weather gods cooperated as well.

Thank you for the feedback! The sales tax is a big reason for going with this. It’s a virtual 10% off from getting it from a retailer.

I like the idea of a flexible lens to start. From what I have seen on FM and eBay, $3000 for that lens is a good $500 under any seller I could find.

Yes, you are getting a good price for the combo. Agree with flexibility of the zoom. IBIS in the X2D allows for handholding at very low shutter speeds.

It is a big outlay upfront but when you see the images you will not regret it.

Meant to ask Scott, is it known that December will be the release? Or is that when Hassy regularly releases gear?

That’s just the rumor, no one knows.

One worry I had on the 35-75 is that it is older lens from previous generations with unreliable AF. What was your experience with it? Did it focus well and similarly quick to the newer lenses?

I don't have it now, so I can't do A/B tests. I did not encounter any focus issue with it though. My use case is static objects and I use back-button focus.

The 35-75 is spectacular. It’s weighty and short but optically brilliant. It works very well on the X2D.

Focus speed is not as fast as the new lenses. But it’s one of the best of the older lenses when it comes to AF. The zoom, 90 f3.2 and 21mm are the best focusing of the older lenses. I use the lens regularly on my X2D’s and don’t really think about the AF when swapping between it and the newer lenses. You do need to accept that even the newer lenses are not as quick as any other system on the market. There’s face detection but no AFC.

Generally I use the 35-75 when wandering a new city or for landscapes, where it really is mind blowingly good. For a daily carry I prefer a prime or two. Say a 28 and 55. More of a Leica M or Q on steroids than a small format replacement.

IQ won’t change with the new camera. You’ll get a joystick and *maybe* improved AF. We’ll have to see. Even if it gets to GFX levels it’s still going to be behind any small format system for AF. But it’ll likely be an improvement. If AFC is important the maybe a GFX100Sii is a better choice. While I accept the GFX system is better from a performance point of view I still carry the X2D when I travel. I value the handling and simplicity more than all the Fuji bells and whistles. That’s really the choice you make getting into Hasselblad. And the colour science.

Sounds like a good deal. Some of us will be upgrading to the new camera, but many..myself included won’t upgrade. When I need a fast, accurate continuous autofocus then I’m using my Sony FF. When size and autofocus speed isn’t an issue, then the X2D is a great choice. Personally, I prefer primes, but that’s just me. My go to walk around lens is the 38v followed by the 25v..but then again my main lens on my FF is 21mm & manual focus..

I just got one after going back and forth because of the impending model. Have a bunch of travel coming up this summer and looking forward to using it a bunch.

I haven't followed the Hasselblad market. Any thoughts on what the X2D would drop to on the used market once the new model is released?

Hey, OP if you don't go for it, PM me who the dealer is so I can get that kind of a deal.

Looks like better autofocus is on the menu for ii. I don’t need better for what I shoot. Your mileage may vary.

If it interests you and it's in budget, then I'd do it. There's always going to be a better deal eventually. You could wait until vII's released and say that. And there's no guarantee the used prices will be impacted. Hassy's got people hooked, so it may be time to raise the launch MSRP. The next model could be $10k, and that's not going to do much to move the needle on used vI pricing in the short term, unless it's such a hot release, the market's flooded with people making the switch. Better to have the camera you want today than chase price reductions that may not happen for six months to a year.
