p.1 #1 · R7 + Kenko 1.4xTC + Canon 70-300L - AF OK but no IS
Hi,
My first post on FM, and pretty much as in the title.
I've had the Canon 70D + 70-300L for years. It tried it with a Kenko 1.4x DG TC ages back, but never used it like that as while IS would work the AF was always a bit iffy.
I recently upgraded to an R7 with it's image based AF system no longer aperture restricted so I tried again.
I found in static indoor tests using the EF/RF adapter the IQ and AF are both great with and without the Kenko TC. Hrray I thought, no need to buy a 400mm lens!
Only, no...
I then found the 70-300L lens IS does not turn on with the R7 and a TC, whereas it works fine without the TC.
Anyone else have this experience with the Canon R7 giving no lens IS when using EF lenses and a 3rd party TC?
Is it a power issue?
I don't have any other stabilised EF lenses to test whether it's a general issue, or that specific lens. I've only got EFS and they won't go on the Kenko.
It's ironic, as I can't use the 70-300L + TC combo hand held either way round - the 70D can't AF with it and the R7 can't power the lens IS!

I too have the 70d and 70-300L (brilliant combo)
I also have the RP and R100
Not tried using the kenko although I do have it. For me I found the IS never switches off when attached to the R bodies? With DSLR’s it would activate then stop after a moment of inactivity whereas with the R it never ever stops, it’s just activated constantly
Hence I stopped pairing it as was not prepared to damage my lens.
Not sure how this helps you, but your issues maybe yet another quirk ??

Hi,
I'd noticed it starts up and stays on for a while.
I just put it to my ear to check again, and it does eventually switch off when the screen turns off and the camera makes a little power down noise.
Looks like the R series cameras keep the lens fully powered until they go into idle mode, then power down until woken by the shutter button. The older DLSRs stopped IS as soon as the shutter was released.
It took about 45s to idle down ...might look to see if I can set it shorter somewhere in the menus.
If you ever get chance to test on your R-series with the lens and a TC I'd be really interested to know if the IS still works for you.
If my IQ tests were anything to go by there pretty much no image degradation at all with the Kenko, it actually revealed fine details the bare lens missed on a £20 note at 5m target distance.

Slight segway from original post but relevant to IS aspect.
I can't post links within 24hrs of registering, so if you do a search for R7 power saving gets you to the canon online manual. I assume RP/R100 are the same.
Spanner #3 has power saving, can set auto off times etc.
Setting auto power off to 15s still leaves IS operating for 26s (weirdly), but at least it halved the time it's on for..
Be much easier and reassuring if there was a setting to just have IS on when shutter is half pressed.

To close this off I think I found the issue, though not confirmed the solution.
The R7 menu for Digital IS gives a message when the lens IS switch is set to Off and the menu set to On. Turning the lens IS on makes the message go away. It does this with and without the TC, so the camera sees the lens has IS available in both cases.
I suspect the TC is tapping power off for itself, and this leaves insufficient power for the lens IS.
The solution is probably to pull the electronics from the TC and just have direct pin connections front-to-back. Will be some time before I can try it tho.
