I'd be curious what upgrades if any Leica did to the Sigma 28-70mm. The MTF charts that they published show significantly different characteristics from the original Sigma version. For example, the MTF charts shows center resolution is quite high at 70mm and it's sharper than at 28mm. Very different than this review of the Sigma version. https://opticallimits.com/sony/sigma-28-70mm-f-2-8-dg-dn-contemporary-review/
The bundled kit with the SL3-S actually seems like decent value...for Leica and might not be bad as a second camera to a Leica m system.
If I am comparing the correct version of Sigma 28-70 F2.8 lens construction (Sigma Contemporary 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN L-mount) to the new Leica 28-70 F2.8 lens construction posted at the start of this thread, I see optical construction similarities as expected, but there also seems to be a some differences. E.g., amount of spacing between some of the optical groups between the two brand's optical designs.

I know I may be the odd man out here, but I will pay more for higher build quality and tighter tolerances. BUT, the much shorter 28-70 range compared to my 24-90 means I will likely not buy it. I wish Leica would build an updated 24-90 or even a 24-120 REAL Leica in a smaller, lighter package than the current 24-90 Vario-Elmarit. If I travel with the 24-90 I don't take anything else because it's just too darn heavy and big. Look at the Nikon 24-120. Great lens, so it can be done.
I would kill for an updated 24-90 with just slightly less weight.

I don't think Leica would change the optical design, since they haven't done so in the past when re-housing Sigma lenses. It's basically a solid, metal, and better-looking version of the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8...which is already a pretty good lens.
My favorite is still the original SL 24-90/2.8 but it's definitely huge.

I would not expect a change in optical design either. However look at the lens group spacing compared between the two. This is what caught my attention. Screenshot = Leica lens on the left, Sigma lens on the right:

The different spacing in the drawings may just reflect two sets of floating elements in the design.
Depicting two different focal lengths, seems like a plausible explanation for the lens group spacing differences in the 28-70 diagrams.
FWIW, and probably just a coincidence apparently both designs are depicted with the same focal lengths, when comparing the Leica SL 24-70 zoom and the Sigma 24-70 ART zoom diagrams as there are no such lens group spacing differences in their respective optical design diagrams/Lens Cuts.

Are you planning to get one? I usually stay away from zooms, but this one is compact enough to tempt me, even knowing I could get the same Sigma version, although in a plastic barrel.

I tend to use my Sony kit when I need/want to use zoom lenses. However, like you, I am Very curious to hear user results with this new compact Leica zoom. Likewise we can expect to see more than a few direct comparisons between the Leica and Sigma versions on the SL platform as well. Should be interesting!

btw. Unfortunately, Panasonic doesnt really seem to play a role in this forum. Theres the new Panasonic L-Mount 24-60mm 2.8. Would also be interesting to see how it performs on a Leica SL.

I tested this lens in Copenhagen a month ago and would have brought it home if I'd had gear in my trip budget. I hate mid-range zooms typically, but this one is amazing. The balance on the SL2-S was excellent, the color was excellent, and the close focus blew me away.

Hope Leica would have better dust resistant capability than sigma with better build quality. At least justify the price tag and increased lens weight.
It's fully weather-sealed, like the rest of the SL line.
