p.1 #1 · Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC ART specs

I just caught this on SAR but have to say given a 67mm filter thread it may not be that big for a zoom 1.8. Have to see but I do see it as a really nice event style type lens and even travel. I like the extra 5mm focal length over the 16-35 style. Could be something worth watching . Im sporting the 16-25 and 24-50 2.8 lenses and I could switch both of them out for just this lens and might be an option for some folks as well.

Here are the posted specs

17-40mm f/1.8 E

uses aspherical elements made of SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass
manufactured with advanced polishing technology to minimize chromatic aberration, flare, distortion
Aperture ring, with declick
sealed against dust and splashes
excellent sharpness from corner to corner already at f/1.8
HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) autofocus motor (fast, silent and accurate)
excellent control over focus breathing
Internal Zoom
Size: 115.9mm long, maximum diameter 72.9mm
67mm filter
weight: 535g
Shipment start in July

Im going to watch this myself . be nice as a crop type lens since it's a 1.8

Have to say I shot a gazillion events and that range usually is that 20mm to 35 range for a lot of it this fits in nicely without switching out a lens

Crop mode it would be a 25.5 mm to 60mm and sporting a 61mpx cam that's a nice option.

I'm excited about it. I'm hoping it'll pair up nicely with the 10-18/2.8 DC on my 6700, since it is an APSC lens.

It should be a very big deal for people still shooting the format, especially FX30 shooters. I was using an adapted EF mount 18-35/1.8 when I had the FX30, and it was great for the camera. Getting one smaller, lighter, and native is huge if the performance is comparable or better.

Could make for a great working combo along with the Sony 50-150 f2 or Tamron 35-150

Exactly this.
Every apsc video shooter will be interested in this. It's a great move by Sigma.

For photos, it doesn't make nearly as much sense.

Eh, I'll use it for stills, assuming I like it. I can do my work trips with this and the 10-18. But, yeah, I'm mostly looking forward to using it on the a1, which is now my s35 video camera.

I don't know why more video people don't talk about what an AMAZING s35 video camera the a1 is! The oversampled 4k really is excellent. I shoot most of the video I do in that format.

For apsc and stills, I'm just just very picky about weight. For 200 grams more you could just use the a1 and the Tamron 28-75. I just can't see it.

It will be a big difference when on a gimbal for video though. You can't zoom with 28-75 without risking balance issues. This 17-40 is an internal zoom, so gimbal-friendly. This is going to be a very popular lens. To this day the 18-35 still holds it's value, I'd imagine that will change rapidly with this announcement.

Announced today in most of the relevant mounts... except Z. It's odd that Nikon is suddenly falling behind Canon in this regard, but I guess their licensing deal with Sigma wasn't quite as successful.

P.S. Nice that there will be another 17-40mm lens around apart from the old Canon f/4 zoom that gave that FL combo a bad name.

I pre-ordered it already for my A6700. Hope to pick it up on July 10th. If the performance is similar to my Canon RF 24-70/2.8 on R6MKII, I'll be ecstatic! The only other lens aside from the Sigma zoom to take for photo shoots is my Sonnar 55/1.8 for heads/shoulders portraits. Having said that, I think the 17-40 will suffice.

Pack size is my big thing. The 6700 packs quite a bit smaller. That and I don't own the 28-75. My choices would be the 24-70GMII or the Canon 24-70/4L, which are both big.

Internal zoom seems killer. I think this is only a little longer in length than the Sigma 18-50 when you're totally zoomed in.

Now we just need Sony to make an X-T5 competitor to use this lens with.

I doubt we'll ever see a Sony with that level of dedicated exposure dials (or that much thought put into the UI). They seem content to let Fuji have the lead on APS-C, but I do wonder if Canon's flood of varied capabilities in their releases will force Sony to take it more seriously.

If they do, I'd rather they shoot for an X-H2s competitor. I'd get a lot more out of a 26MP stacked sensor than I would out of the additional 14MP. Put it in a body style more comfortable to use with their teles, and I'm sold.

Looks great for video, but for stills I think I still prefer a full-frame option like 24-50, 24-70 or 28-70.

Just got mine the other day and done a shoot on the same day with it and my A6700. I love the built, it looks so solid but not that heavy. I'm impressed by the image quality from it---very sharp even @ f/1.8, the bokeh is wonderful and the colour/contrast are excellent! The AF is super fast and accurate. The drawbacks are noticeable pincushion distortion @ 40mm and barrel distortion @ 17mm. It's not a show stopper for me because it is easily corrected via DXO PL 8 Elite. This will be my go-to travel gear and if I do a shoot or two while on vacation. At first I thought I need to add one of my primes i.e. Sonnar 55/1.8 or Batis 85/1.8 but IMHO the head and shoulders shots @ 40mm look excellent so maybe there is no need to take a longer prime lens.
