Yeah, Sony flashes aren't cheap, but they seem to be unique in that the use the Face-AF to measure the white balance in the face which is said to be the secret for the very nice skin tones. Other flash systems for Sony don't do this.
But from what I can see, magmod is not unique, there are similar modifiers from noname brands avaiable at Amazon for very low prices that are attached with Velcro, also there are modifiers from Gary Fong that fits Sony flashes and finally for the Sony HVL-F60RM flash, the Godox magnetic round head adapter fits and Godox has a whole kit with magnetic modifiers and filters which don't cost much. So I don't get what extra magmod brings to the table for those prices?

Yeah sure there are knock-offs, but I;m not one of those that spends $5k on a lens and then go cheap on a filter, same applies to this… you do get what you pay for — but do whatever works for you

Hmm I have those magnetic modifiers so the round head adapter seems like a good way to use what I already have.

A big thank you to everyone who recommended Sony flashes! After one event, I agree they are a joy to work with. They are very nicely designed and easy to use. The F28RMA and F46RM are both very compact and light weight. I like how they integrate with Sony cameras, and I'm very happy there's no touch screen. The AA batteries are no problem. I wish that the F28RMA head would swivel in all directions, but that's a minor complaint.

I just got it and used it at one event. You're right, the F28 doesn't zoom. However, the built-in Wide-Angle Adapter can be flipped down to give it full 24mm coverage when shooting direct flash. That's wide enough for me. Also, when bounced toward the ceiling, the light spreads everywhere with or without the adapter flipped down.

Glad you found them useful for your work. One quick tip I haven’t seen mentioned on YouTube or anywhere else: the F46RM/A and F60RM2 have a built-in spread control setting at each focal length, so there’s no need for a plastic diffuser in my case. It really helps reduce hotspots and evens out the light spread. At the Even setting, the coverage is noticeably smoother than anything I’ve tried from Godox.

The F28 can also serve as a trigger, making it great for a two-light setup. Its output matches the AD100 at 50mm but with a more even spread. Pair two F28s together and you get the output of an AD200 with the fresnel head, while weighing only slightly more than a single AD100. Bounce flash isn’t an issue thanks to the focal length settings. If it could rotate left and right and offer GS compatibility, it would be my ideal travel flash. There’s really a lot to like about this tiny unit.
