I spent a few hours each morning over the weekend, in my waders, sitting in the middle of the river. The Shad run is winding down so I wanted another perspective vs the rocks and the banks. The action was still plentiful and its incredible having Ospreys diving in your lap from all directions. I was constantly spinning around and shot mostly sitting on my knees in about 20" of water. Unfortunately, most of the dives that day were across from me or away so I didn't get many head on shots, but not all was lost.
Here's a bunch from my time there. I was using the Z9/600F4 TC on Saturday. I shot with the R1/RF400 2.8 and 2X TC yesterday. Lots of images here and thanks for looking!

Awesome set! Am so glad had that experience, loved the perspective you had at water level. Am heading to Fredericksburg later this week and plan on getting a set of waders to take with me. Thanks for posting you photos, where I am the osprey habitat has been destroyed, so its especially good too see them thriving someplace nearby.

A lot of great images and some just good. Way too many to comment on and I stopped the slide show as so many are similar.

Thanks, they return here year after year and it seems each year in larger numbers. I counted 23 perched at one time yesterday and that just where I was within a hundred yards each side of me.
I only got int he water a couple times this season but its easily my favorite perspective! Old Mill Park has been the hopping spot for the last week. if not try the Rt1 bridge which is just a few hundred yards walk up river! Good luck!
Ill be in Florida all week so I'll miss the end of the run more than likely.

Hi David. First ... These are some excellent images. You should be proud of them. Many great shots !!!
IMHO you would be better served to split them into 2-3 post. Not that long ago another gentleman posted a wonderful set of images. They were really good , there were just to many in one post to really appreciate them all. A number of members ( myself included ) suggested breaking them up in multiple post. He disagreed ? For me... 8-12 images,( after that ) is where I start to lose interest. My words are not intended as criticism. Only one photographer trying to help another. Again these are wonderful images. Hope to see more of your work.

Wonderful collection! I have no problem with the quantity, myself. I’ll need to view these on my pc; I have always been curious how the RF 400/2.8 fares with the 2x. On my iPad they look great!

Wow oh wow !!! These are just amazing and I enjoyed each and every one. What a marvelous experience it must be to be right in the midst of these beautiful birds as they go about their hunting ! Beautiful set and so very well done.

Thanks all! Im always open for critique and guidance. Thats how I learn! I just wanted to share the experience and not have a few threads going. Ospreys are like paint drying ...They all dive the same and they all leave the water the same. Some dove so close the water splashed on me! It was amazing to see.

So... I guess it was a bust... too bad there wasn't more action for you...
Ahahahahahahah!
I should ever be so lucky!
Congrats on an action-packed fun day out. Those are the ones we remember most.
I agree with some others that some of the impact of the better shots is somewhat lost in the quantity, but still, it was enlightening to see them all at once and realize this was all from one session.
I liked some of the unique ones, like #5? with the talons just breaking the water and its nictating membrane closed, and some of the double fish or one good plus one lost falling catch photos. Without numbering, it's hard to speak too much about favorites on such a large set.

Hello David ........... your POV on these is really appealing to the eye.
I had to chuckle about the image with the fisherman watching the Osprey fly by with the fish in the talons
My we have come a long way with getting so called Holy Grail shots, they have become the common almost and you have plenty I would call Holy Grail images
I'm not sure why someone would say 40 images is boring unless they were boring and they are not. Then again the title says 40+ so why they would bother to bore themselves shows they still were curious
Fantastic finale, incredible captures and beautiful presentation David
