From November until mid-March every year I photograph in the California Central Valley wetlands and grasslands. My main goal is to photograph migratory birds, but I love the landscape here, too, especially when fog, clouds, and haze soften the light.
I have been meaning to share some of these for months, so I'll start with this batch.
wow, what an assortment of landscapes. they are all good. looks like that area has many different places to take landscape pictures. thanks for sharing.
Your work is always so inspiring & evocative. Subject choice, compositional placement,
shadows & light, soft & ethereal pastel color palette . . . all are impeccable.
Central California, from the desert to the coast, is just so beautiful and you always
capture it so well.
”Thank you!” to all of you for stopping by and commenting.
I first started photographing out there in the winter (OK, and late autumn) nearly two decades ago, after a chance encounter with a friend in a coffee cart line. She said, “I think you’d like photographing birds at this place I go to,” and later that week I decided to give it a try. I was hooked.
I primarily visit various wildlife refuges up and down the valley, starting in November and continuing through early March. Whenever possible I target days when I think there will be tule fog. The fog adds atmosphere to the photographs, ranging from the mysterious quality when it is too thick to see more than a short distance (makes bird photography a challenge!) through the later phase when it has cleared by left behind a luminous, glowing atmosphere.
Because the Central Valley is, for many people, either where they work or the place they drive through on the way to someplace else, its potential is often overlooked.
I”m pretty sure that I’ll have at least one more set to share here before long.
Thanks,
Dan

These are wonderful. Even in the shots with the bright sunlight you've got such great moodiness in the resulting images.
