If true, this would be interesting.

The lens is now released:

150 f2 is exactly the same bokeh effect as a 135mm 1.8 and a hair more than a 70-200 2.8 @ 2.8. Definitely impressive to have in a zoom. I think the make or break for this lens will be the weight. If it is impressively light like the 28-70 f2 then this is even more useful. It seems like an either/or scenario between this and the 28-70 though. I doubt anyone is going to use both. Better off picking one and then a prime on the other end of the focal range.

The other thing is that if you're going to have a lens that's going to be used wide open for nice bokeh, it needs to have nice bokeh. I was not a fan of the out of focus rendering on the 28-70 f2.

Slap the 2xTC on that and you've got a 100-300 f/4.
Edited for incorrect f/stop math.

Don't you mean 100-300 f/4? I know you know you lose two stops with a 2X TC. It would be a 70-210 f/2.8 with the 1.4X TC.

I don't know if they spoke of it but this has to be a pretty large lens.

Even with a 1.4 tc it would be a 70-210/2.8. Very interesting lens.

I suppose if I were a dedicated portrait photographer it might be a perfect tool.
For events the Tamron has been great. I am definitely going to pass on this one but it’s going to be awesome for some shooters.

Sony Alpha Rumors has said this: I’ve been told that the lens is a smidge heavier and larger than the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0.

When Andrea gets info from his confirmed sources, it's generally pretty accurate. So, I'm guessing it's in the Tamron ballpark, which is 158mm long and 1165 grams.

I'm guessing not an internal zoom...so likely quite a bit longer when extended.

The Tamron 35-150 is f/2.8 at 150mm, so a 50-150/2.0 is likely to be more than a smidge heavier. But Sony surprised everyone with the weight of the 28-70/2, so anything is possible.

Considering the predicted cost, I'd hope it'd be able to be used with TC's, but then again the 135GM isn't compatible, but here's to hoping. Because that would give the user, in theory, a portrait and sports lens all in one as long as you have the TC's.

It really amazes me that not a single mirrorless system has a 50-200/4-5.6 or 70-210/4 design - other than µ43. Sure the profit margin is smaller, but CaNikOnyTagma all vote no?? Nobody?

Guess Obi-wan the Chinese are my only hope - and the price just went waay up on a mythical lens.

Feel free to look away as I use a Minolta 100-200 or DT 55-200 + ea4... which of course are not much smaller than the Tam 70-300! So much for mirrorless lenses smaller than dSLR.

Hmm, this would be perfect for my portraits (human and dogs). I spent the money for the 28-70 f/2, and I love it, but 50-150 would yield a better working distance, and obviously creamier bokeh (though I like the rendering of the 28-70.) I’ll have to check out prices- I don’t see how I could afford both. Also, I take my left hand off the lens when shooting dogs - this is totally doable with the 28-70, but I’m not sure about this new lens. Otherwise it sounds like a dream.

Interesting range but the 70-200 2.8 GM II covers my needs. Maybe could get more interested if its weight turns out to be less.

I wonder if that $4000 is with or without the tariffs. I'd not be surprised if companies like Sony delay launches of products, at least in the US, due to "evolving market conditions", as Nintendo already has.

I also wonder, if this rumor turns out to be true, whether Sony plans a partner wide-angle f/2 zoom. Say a 20-50mm f/2. Yes it would overlap with the 28-70, but the 50-150 already does, too.

For me this focal length just don't work that well . I need wider and I need longer as well. Now you could add like a 24-50 or 16-35 but the long end is more the issue I need a 200mm zoom. I guess you could add a 1.4 to it which would give you a 210mm on the long side than jump into crop mode for even longer which I do need but for me the 70-200 mm makes more sense as I don't need the 1.4 in it just crop mode but still I can see some folks certainly going for it but a F2 it will be big and heavy no question. The question that one asks here is how good will it be. Worth a test for sure. Im all in for adding lenses to the system and this may work for some folks

Back in the film days a F2 lens is a miracle to have on hand given the low ISO film ratings . I had just about every 200mm or 180mm F2 lens made and they where certainly big and expensive but they worked

A Sony FE 50-150/2.0 is pointless and probably also far too expensive and very heavy.
But I would be very happy about a Sony FE 200/1.8 OSS.

This is an ambitious design and I am happy Sony is coming out with non-standard designs like this, the 12-24 2.8 and the 400-800. The Sigma 300-600 was by that thought a lens that reflected Sony's style.

But the price of this one is quite shocking if true. It should fall if it doesn't sell well.
I've just checked the 12-24 GM, it still has the price at release...

The Tamron 35-150 is such a great lens with such a useful focal length. If this is to replace it/out pace it, it needs to beat it on all counts (IQ, bokeh, size and weight) given the versatility it gives up by starting at 50 instead of 35. I do see where it may interest some as an alternative to the 70-200 or even 135/1.8 - but I don't have those lenses.
