As much as I hate to support the R8, I will agree with all those comments above saying it's a better compact video camera than this thing.
I actually moved from Fuji XE4 to an R8, and it takes wonderful photos, has amazing AF, and can shoot great 4K also.... but man does it cut corners. Lack of IBIS frustrated the hell out of me, really showing how much of a compromise all the otherwise great compact RF primes are... Battery life was my biggest concern going into the R8, but wound up not being much of an issue. Easy to

The R8 is indeed a hidden gem. I bought it after upgrading to the R6 mk2, because it has the same sensor and is therefore a good companion camera without the extra weight and cost of a second R6 mk2. I had RP bodies before so I had all the spare batteries I thought I needed, except that in practice I actually seldom use them. Most on my glass has IS so IBIS is not a requirement. As for the viewfinder headache, maybe a clinical trial comparing different Scotch distilleries could shed some light . Seriously though, the viewfinder is the same as the old RP, so it probably pays to give eyes a rest from time to time, in that aspect the R6 mk2 is definitely far superior.

It's only $20 more than launch right now. 2 weeks ago, it was back at launch price, which I why I bought one new (straight from Canon) instead of used at $30 more.

Here in the UK it’s £750 body only.
That’s crazy

It actually comes out to $50 more expensive over there after currency conversion and before VAT. We have taxes here in the US, too, from 0-7% or so, but not added to the selling price. So for 7%, we'd pay $700 for a $650 sale price.

A crazy amount of money
Hence I refuse to spend anymore on the R stuff
I only take snaps, I’m not so arrogant to think my pictures are anything special to anyone but me. So why blow best part of £1000 on canons cheapest entry body and lens

Makes no sense to me…..just madness.

Yeah, not sure if it's VAT or Canon purposely upping prices to subsidize lower costs in the US. Other brands' pricing is much closer between countries.

Regardless, R100 is even lower end and cheaper, but what you gain with the EVF, you lose in many, many other areas. I can always tack on an ungainly EVF to the R50V if I absolutely need it, but can't gain the lost features back in the R100, no matter what's added to the camera.

I agree with you on the R100 I stupidly bought one used not quite realising just how dumbed down it really is. So then bought a used R50 as they take same batteries and same cage. However as clever as the 50 is I still find myself reaching for the M50 if I’m in a mirrorless mood….i.e. Lazy 🤣

Otherwise it’s DSLR’s either Canon or Pentax.

Canon have lost me, I used to be brand loyal but the whole shift to R has left me quite bitter.
I’m just not bothered about starting over once again wigh crazy overpriced gear. Can’t believe canon never released nice fast primes for their aps-c bodies!! It’s all just a mismatch these days and now stupidly over priced… looking at you R50v 😳

Hence I’m no longer canon fan boy

I just use whatever I have to hand and almost always still get the shot.

I understand R50v is a video-centric camera, and the C1-C3 on the mode dial are intended for custom video setting.

I am planning to use R50v as a special use case photo camera if the custom shooting mode works for still. Can any R50v owner here help me test to register still photo setting (like a specific M setting) to the custom modes? Can it be done?

According to the R5V manual, the camera needs to be in video mode in order to program C1, C2 and C3. If you want photo modes on physical controls in a tiny camera, you should look at the R50 or R100.

That’s how I read the manual as well. I hoped R50v would work because I like the small form factor and lock button on the R50v. Also, R50/100 won’t give me C1-C3 on the dial either, unless I move up to R10.
