p.3 #1 · PD Roller Pro - 300% too heavy and 300% too expensive

CDG must not like you! I’ve never been caught there, though recently my wife was the lucky winner of the random extra security flagging and got to unpack everything in her carry-on before boarding.

But I’m with you on staying within the regulations for size and weight, especially for international travel.

One thing, though… did you see the updated PD page where they show the thing fitting into the test bins for something like 20 airlines, including some where they are more likely to check size? (I still have the same concerns that you have about the weight of this

They have, but it is sort of old data. American Airlines has flagged that they are changing the carry-on luggage size and weight requirements this year, and others are expected to follow. When I spend $500-600 on a roller, I want to work for at least 5 years.

Also, just because a tester manages to get on a flight/airline once, it doesn't mean that you would get caught next time.

As I said, I'm sure the PD is a great bag, and I am sure I would really like it for the right use cases. I is just not a perfect one-and-only bag, but I assume a lot of PD's customers are dentists with Leica setups so spending extra is not an issue ;-)

What change is American contemplating? I know United updated their requirements, but they did not change bag sizes. The change was to limit you to literally two carry-on items. One can be the usual carry-on size for the overhead bins and the other can be as large as the “personal items” bag limit for under-seat storage.

It used to be that you could bring both of those plus a small additional item like a laptop case or similar. But earlier this year when I flew they were being quite particular about this change.

The tester images actually are photos of the bag inside the test bins for a bunch of airlines, not claims that a someone got away with it. Take a look at the PD site to see.

And, again, I’m still with you on the problematic weight issue.

I wish some company would make a roller that rolls on grass, dirt, gravel with ease. Most rollers are fine on hard surfaces but take them off road and you end up holding than than rolling.

I traveled 80-100% for years for work... Used travelpro brand but ONLY the ones that had TWO rollerblade style wheels instead of the stupid 4 tiny things they call wheels. Those suckers will go anywhere and have been close to indestructible for my use AND they do not add much exterior length to the bag.

Yes…many airlines are in the process of changing their carryon limits and actually enforcing them. Carryon overall is currently out of control causing issues for airlines trying to leave on time.

Glad to see actual videos of the case not fitting into some of the adjusted carryon requirements just to reenforce my statements of the bag not meeting requirements…instead of some know it all member arguing otherwise.

30 hrs left if anyone wants in. I cancelled my order. This might be better than the rest of the ones I have, but $425 + 20% VAT + shipping, etc makes it $540 and arrival sometimes after the summer. I can live without it.

I'm sure there will be some cheap used ones after a while.

The external size of the luggage is within American size limits, and from the video it is clearly within a lot of the European airlines limits, too. It looks like it will be a close call on a couple of airlines in the video.

But that’s not the real issue for traveling photographers who might hope to use this luggage to take gear into the cabin. Two other factors are likely to be a bigger issue for photographers, leaving aside the cost for now:

1. The luggage weighs 8.6 pounds. PD’s recommended gear insert adds something like another 1.5 pounds (IIRC), so the luggage plus insert comes to about 10 pounds before you load it. With carry-on weight limits on some European airlines at a little more than 18 pounds, you’ll have only room for about 8-9 pounds of stuff inside before you go over the limit. That’s going to be a problem for anyone carrying big lenses, a couple of bodies, and/or lots of lenses.

2. Also IIRC, the luggage capacity is only about 34 liters. That’s pretty small for a carry-on roller with these external dimensions. Similar units from other manufacturers can hold up to about 44 liters.

I think that the capacity issues (weight and volume) are more likely to be a problem for users than the exterior dimensions.

Knowing Peak Designs and their attention to detail, it is probably a beautiful product, and I can imagine some scenarios where it would work fine. For example, those who want a roller for just photo gear and who will travel on US airlines should be OK, along with those who won’t use it for flying.

YMMV.

It has been over half a year, and I wanted to hear feedback from people who actually used this bag to travel, preferably internationally, as well as European travel if possible.

I got one at a good price that I plan to pick up tomorrow, but I just wanted to double-check with some user feedback here.
