These are all simply amazing. Did I read that these images are 25 years old!! If so I have a lot of learning to do because these are breath taking!!

Maybe this came across a bit unclear.
I originally photographed these subjects 25 years ago and have now re-shot them using modern technology.

English is not my native language, so there might be some inaccuracies here and there.

Here are three photos from back then and how they looked at the time:

https://s1.directupload.eu/images/250309/6mbcwir4.jpg
https://s1.directupload.eu/images/250309/ehp4ix2b.jpg

This image here is also about 25 years old:
https://s1.directupload.eu/images/250309/ljryleo5.jpg

I created a remaster from it – it's not a new photo.
With decades of experience in image editing, I’ve learned a lot. This allows me to enhance even old photos with just 6 MP – taken with the first digital SLR cameras – so well that you wouldn’t notice the RAW file is over 25 years old.

However, this is only possible because I already used exposure bracketing back then. Without that, such extensive post-processing wouldn’t have been possible.

But for the Frankfurt images, I wanted to capture them anew with modern technology.

I had decided to use a different bracket from my archive, hence the small differences in the subject.
Would you have realised that this photo is so old and is a remaster, just re-edited but now with much more experience? :-)

Maybe I'll show some more old photos soon. I think you'll be amazed :-)
As I said, the ones from Frankfurt have now been re-shot using the latest technology.

Incredible set. So you shot most of these with bracketing? I noticed most are not long exposure shots. Based on the motion blur probably 1/20s or so.

These are all long-exposure shots taken as a bracket. All the details are in the description on Flickr, where you can also check out the 250-megapixel photos in full resolution.

Many thanks again for accepting me into the forum! I’m happy to share my knowledge—I’ve been photographing for so long. I even remember the early days of Fred Miranda and followed the forum for a long time, though only as a silent reader. Time really flies! But now I thought it was time to finally say hello, haha. 🙂

I have no secrets and I’m happy to help. Night photography is my passion. It’s how I started photography, and for a long time, I focused exclusively on it. Later, I spent over 15 years exploring other areas, particularly video. But

For your bracketing, let’s say you start at 3s. How long of an exposure you need to go to still make a difference in the final HDR Raw image? Your Holbeinsteg image started at 2s bracket all the way up to 41s. Also do you do 3 or 5 images brackets?

When I take night photos handheld with, for example, f/1.4 and don’t use a tripod (which results in lower quality), I use an automatic 5-exposure bracket with a 2 EV spacing per shot. The ISO is increased so that IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) is used to its maximum, and the rest is compensated by adjusting the ISO. This exposure series can be converted into an HDR RAW file, resulting in an impressive final image—especially considering that it was taken handheld at night.

Here’s an example:
For this photo, I didn’t provide a detailed explanation of the process because it would have been too long. Especially with a subject like this—shot upside down—you are more flexible and quicker when shooting handheld rather than spending 30 minutes with a tripod testing different positions.

There’s no fixed rule for the number of shots when using a tripod. Sometimes it’s 5, 8, or even 15 exposures—it depends on the subject and the required dynamic range. I prefer to take a few more shots rather than too few because it’s frustrating to realize at home that something is missing.

Especially with very bright light sources, having multiple small exposure steps helps prevent visible gradations. It also helps reduce noise: every additional image added to the HDR RAW slightly lowers the noise. That’s why I prefer to take a few extra shots rather than risk missing important details. 😊

An example of an exposure series during the day:
When photographing inside a church handheld, a 3-exposure bracket with a 2 EV spacing may be sufficient, as the dynamic range in daylight is often not as extreme. However, this is not always the case—depending on the lighting conditions, some areas may still be overexposed or too dark. A 5-exposure bracket is the safer method to ensure consistently good results, especially when dealing with high contrast or challenging lighting situations.

For this particular photo, I used a 13-image exposure bracket. The number of shots depends on the subject—there’s no strict rule. Over time, you gain experience and develop a sense of what is needed.

By the way, this technique can also be very useful in bird photography during the day. You’d be surprised how often it produces better results than without it.

That’s very helpful. I’m going to play with it. With Q3’s 60mp files and excellent lens, I think this can produce some spectacular results.

With the Leica Q3, you can capture a 5-shot exposure bracketing (AEB) sequence with ±2 EV steps at f/1.7 in aperture priority mode (A-mode) – perfect for handheld night photography without a tripod. The maximum shutter speed can be limited to 1/8s, ensuring that the camera increases ISO instead of extending exposure time in low-light conditions. This allows for sharp and detailed HDR shots without motion blur, even in challenging lighting situations.

The 5 RAW files can be enhanced in Lightroom using AI noise reduction and then merged into a single HDR-DNG (RAW) file. This results in improved tonal balance, reduced noise, and a naturally expanded dynamic range—perfect for capturing night scenes without a tripod.

Stunning pictures. Stefan! And thanks for explaining your process. How do you compensate for motion for bird photography during day if you are bracketing? Thanks.

Thank you, Kalifornier!

Great question – in fact, HDR RAW bracketing often works surprisingly well even for bird photography during the day. When a bird is perched and not moving much, the entire bracketed series is usually captured in less than half a second – the base exposure is typically something like 1/1000 sec. Lightroom’s deghosting does a really good job handling small movements or slight shifts. Even ocean waves are usually no problem at all.

Of course, it doesn’t work for birds in flight – the motion is simply too much. But for still scenes, it’s absolutely worth trying. I’ve even had good results with panning shots of cars or planes – and even long exposures of moving cars with light trails can be stacked as HDR RAW surprisingly well once you get the hang of it.

Spectacular images. My initial reaction seeing your images was there was something different about them. Thank you for sharing your technique on how you created them.
