I'm still using the older LC-E6 chargers with the 1.2A current since they are faster. …… It's really too bad that Canon doesn't make USB chargers like Nikon.

Same here on the LC-E6 and luckily I have two so those are now dedicated to the LP-EL but are not portable. For the LP-E6 {, N, NH, P} batteries I have ISDT LP2, and Watson chargers and Llano chargers that work great. Too much to juggle though.
I guess I’m now going to think about carrying one of my several Anker or UGREEN power banks and maybe charge through th camera. can that be done for the LP-EL in the EL-5 as well? For my Godox V1 flashes their batteries can be charged by charged via USB. I wonder if they or someone else will tiring out a flash that supports the Canon multifunction smart shoe, any idea if one is coming?

I think that I found my Watson dual charger plates support the LP-EL battery size since they have no sides to constrain the height. My LP-EL battery plugged in fine and appears to be charging. Unfortunately it’s not USB based. It’s a good adaptable charger that works for different batteries like my Sony’s as well as long as you have the right top plates to adapt them to the different batteries.

Thanks for posting. I bought a new EL-5 last summer when B&H was having a fire sale. I don’t really use flash except when doing macro but figured for $200 it would be nice to have in my kit. So when the flash arrived I put it in my cabinet unopened. I saw this post, had an affected serial so charged up the battery and tested. Result, after 3 days battery is still on full.
Bottomline, this issue probably only affects early manufacturing units. I’m guessing refurbs sold by Canon since at least last summer were also fixed before being resold.

I bought mine on that same deal and it was one of the units with S/N affected by the defect. At the time I figured the then future R5 II would be able to use it.

FYI - after six days of have the EL-5 powered off and a LP-EL battery in it ( with brief turn one to check the battery status) the battery is now at 80% charged. So it not discharging it in 48-72 hours it a liiile faster than expected. I’m going to retest it with a brand new battery I got during the week to have as a spare. Will see how that goes.

But did you charge the battery and test it outside of the flash? I would subtract that loss from the 20% loss in the flash.
