p.1 #1 · Straumsvík - winter edition

Snow-covered lava by the bay’s edge at Straumsvík, just outside Reykjavík, Iceland, illuminated by the golden light of the low sun. The final image was composed on a different occasion from the first three.

From my blog post.

Thanks, Douglas. No, it isn't a hótel. This used to be a farm but no longer. Now the house is privately owned.

Beautiful light, and nice sense of starkness and isolation.

Thanks, Ross. The starkness & isolation are characteristic of Iceland, but this particular location is just outside of Reykjavík and right by the main road that connects the city and Keflavík International Airport.

Rajan, good to see you back What an incredible light! Love the colors and composition. What's impressive is how you get amazing depth of field with small F stop.

Thank you, Parul.

From the helicopter the landscape below and the subjects are well past optical 'infinity' and so depth of field is not a concern. You keep the lens as wide open as possible to yield an exposure time that counteracts helicopter vibrations while keeping the ISO to the lowest possible value.

I never liked 24-70 2.8 lenses, but you make them sing.

Jim, KD, Bill, and RatX2 - thank you, all.

RatX2 - the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II is very good optically but not excellent (a subjective assessment, needless to add). Especially after using Zeiss prime lenses the shortcomings seem acute. But it is versatile and today, with AI powered software corrections, many of those shortcomings have been mitigated, closing the gap with the best of the primes.
