I can confirm the green/black screen issues are all fine with the new 1.0.1 firmware….

This has bothered me since getting the camera. It’s absolutely better now and although they didn’t mention it in the release notes, the stabilization works better.

That is good to hear, looking forward to getting my replacement. Almost no one was mentioning the stabilization problems, and the very harsh correction it was applying after reaching the end of its travel. It would be nice if they offered multiple sensitivity settings for IBIS like they do for AF.

The IBIS still has the corner wobble with wider lenses as well but I haven't seen a camera yet that doesn't have this problem.

8K60FPS - This is not documented clearly anywhere I have seen, but 8K60FPS is only an option if you pick compressed raw. I am fine with that, 8K is massive as it is, but I never saw the advertising materials mention 8K60FPS RAW is compressed raw only

Is this what you mean with having the only option to choose RAW light? I can't get 8k 60 full RAW as it says "these items cannot be combined"

Thanks for taking the time to write up and share your experiences. Hopefully, Canon will work out the bugs—the quirks one just has to be aware of and work around.

One would think that with all the alpha and beta testers out there, so many professionals giving feedback, etc. - the manufacturers could produce a camera that delivers on all levels. Still, it seems impossible, regardless of the brand. There is no perfect camera out there.

Yes, it also shows the confusing mess that the codec menu has become. I assume 8K60FPS raw is not available because the data rate would be too high or the camera would overheat, but its not really clear until you try to pick it in the menus.

I think that manufacturers including Canon know about many of the problems prior to launch but launch anyway with the plan to "fix it later" in the rush to sell more cameras. The black/green screen issue was so prevalent there's no way they did not know about that one before launch further evidenced by how quickly they released a FW fix for it. The problem was only visible if you used video so they hedged their bets that enough people would mainly use the photo features that they could release the FW in time to silence the video users.

In the meantime, consumers like myself get screwed while wasting hours with tech support. That is also one of the reasons why I exchanged my R5II body instead of just waiting to see if the FW update would fix it, Canon will have to eat the cost of the exchange, the exchange still cost me $100+ though for shipping and insurance, but the only way to get their attention is to vote with our wallets.

Canon has been taking a lot of heat over the last year for closed lens mount, high prices on RF glass, and not coming out with R5II and R1 sooner, so I suspect that Canon was shipping this model at all costs at this point. Still surprising with the amount of bugs it had. Not exactly the you-can-still-trust-the-Canon-brand-event they were hoping for.

It is definitely not the Canon of old "Last to the party but the most reliable", now it seems closer to the Sony approach "get it out the door as quick as possible and we will fix everything later if we get around to it". I do think in about 6 months as long as there isn't an actual HW problem that was overlooked, the R5II will be a solid camera with useable FW.

FW 1.0.1 seems to have fixed the worst bugs and according to CR new FW is inbound less than 30 days later.
