These are amazing images, but I don’t see nearly enough difference to switch away from my Sigma 85mm. It does everything I need and provides super sharp images.

Received my new 85mm 1.4 GM ll today. What an awesome lens. May be the sharpest GM I have used and I have used or owned most of them. I know sharpness isn’t everything but it is sharp even wide open. AF is fast and accurate on my A1 as expected.
I find the bokeh great and has its own character going on. Know it’s subjective but so far really like it. I use LR Classic and see even with the latest update there is no profile yet. Not sure if I should just use the built in profile or maybe the GM I profile.

I guess not too many folks here bought this lens!
It's readily in stock everywhere which is not typical for a new lens release. It's an expensive lens for something where there are so many alternatives

Lots of great images on this thread. Colors, sharpness and autofocus appear great from this new 85mm. Just not digging the bokeh. Too many years using 85mm 1.2’s I suppose!

I was considering the new Sony 85/1.4 GMll, but I find myself sticking with my 70-200/2.8 GMII because it’s just so good. Plus, I’ve been enjoying the option of cropping my 50mm f/1.2 to essentially create a 75mm f/1.8, which works great for me.
I will say I like the images that I have seen so far! I certainly look forward to seeing more from this new 85!

It does.
I don’t see much to distinguish these photos from any other 50 or 85 (depending on where you stand). Is it lighter, how’s the AF accuracy in low light, these are the things I’d be interested in. Do you need to buy $3000 lenses for photos of gates…? I get addiction/obsession, but just sayin’
Happy Halloween 🎃

The bokeh is not the greatest if there are things nearby in the background and/or you frame loosely. So as an outdoor portraits lens, which is a typical use case for an 85, the bokeh is a legitimate consideration to make. That said the lens is very sharp and has a lot of bite with a pleasant overall rendering (skintones render nicely) and if you frame tightly, the bokeh is less of an issue. AF is solid. It's not a sport lens at all but I shot some really low light stuff yday (12800k at f1.4 125/so) and the AF left nothing to be desired.
That said I'm nearing the return window and am still on the fence. Mainly due to cost and because the 85GMI renders better outdoors. If I still shot weddings regularly it would be a no brainer as the AF is a massive improvmenment over the MKI. But as $2k with taxes is a lot of money and there is a real trade-off vs the MKI

Yes, bokeh looks "very busy" for a portrait lens... I really hope we will get f/1.2 version of this lens, and hopefully with some extra "smooth focus" feature.

I think the strenght of this lens is not the bokeh but more the contrast and resolution making the subject POP, the rendering is very different than the 85mm GM 1. Both are very nice.
