Yes, the difference is there! I am just curious what people think, as I expected a bigger difference I guess...

As for me, I will be pretty happy with the 85 f/1.4 GM version I for portraits. I have had the lens and really liked the output. I also have the Sony/Zeiss A mount 135 f/1.8 that I use on an LAEA-5 adapter instead of the 135 f/1.8 GM, and I am thinking about getting the Sigma 35 f/1.2 DG DN rather than the 35 f/1.4 GM. In all three cases I am making a similar decision and that would be fine with me. I do wish all three lenses had less axial CA and better AF, but otherwise

No to wander too far off topic, but I don't think LoCA is visibly better on the 35GM, nor is the AF faster...

I've watched a good number of reviews and I'm not seeing any meaningful difference. It seems to me that the new lens improved on everything that needed to be improved, while retaining everything that was great about the old lens.

Better than what? I am comparing it to the Sigma 35 f/1.2 and I think the AF is clearly better on the GM and the GM can even do more fps and to my eyes the GM wide open has a bit less axial CA than the Sigma wide open but that isn’t totally fair as the Sigma has a wider aperture. I agree at the same aperture they aren’t that different. Despite those advantages for the GM I think I am going to go with the Sigma for its strengths that is what I am saying.
I think I will pick the 85 GM I over the II as well mostly because I see a similar pattern of strengths and weaknesses.

I'm curious about how different the xd linear motors are vs the sigma dg dn--I get the 15fps cap (which seems to be software enforced) but that doesn't really bother me as I don't ever shoot that fast.

Yes, I mean 35GM vs 35/1.2DN - the AF is not "clearly better on the GM" . You can get higher fps sure, but in everyday usage usage they are very similar... Regarding LoCA, it's difficult to compare because Sigma seems to have faster sharpness fall-off so LoCA becomes more visible earlier, to my eyes at least...

I pre-ordered it.

I have a hunch that the the MKII will lack the glow that made the MKI special, but I do use the 85GM for wedding receptions. F1.4 allows me to keep the ISO in a reasonable range in low light and the medium telephoto compression makes for a very nice FOV (not to mention you have enough reach thst you're not physically on the dance floor to frame a shot lol). 85GM mark I AF is atrocious.

I would not be opposed to owning both versions of the 85GM for different purposes.

On the tangential topic of 35GM vs Bigma 35i..Bigma has a more pleasing portrait rendering and bokeh hands down. The 35GM does focus better, but the Bigma is not bad at all. Not like 35mm is an action oriented focal length. Downside to the Bigma is that it's freaking massive. (I use 35i when shooting casually)

This thread is not about those two lenses, but I don't think we disagree. Axial CA becomes more visible to my eyes too and that is what I meant by more axial CA. What I care about is axial CA becoming visible earlier. With regard to AF focus, the 35 GM is fantastic and totally suitable even for very fast moving subjects like skateboarders or basketball and for those things I would appreciate the higher fps while still maintaining great AF and the GM can do that and the Sigma cannot, but that is not what I am interested win shooting any more and the Sigma would be more than good enough for what I want to shoot.

And I find a similar situation with the 85 GM I and II. The 85 GM I has a bit of trouble with its AF keeping up with fast action. It has limited fps as well, but its AF is more than good enough for my purposes and although early reports are that the 85 GM II has less axial CA than the 85 GM I, to my eyes anyway I prefer the bokeh of the GM I enough that I think I will put up with the bit of extra axial CA. That is my perspective anyway, YMMV.

Ha! Haven't heard that in a while. "Bigma" used to be used when referring to the old Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM.

In the comment above I think it was used to refer to Sigma 35 lens.

Indeed, the increase of the cat's eye effect is subtle. The old GM seems to have slightly smoother bokeh balls as well in the magic's video, but it's subtle as well. I would like to see a direct comparison with a more structured background. But honnestly it was expected. The GM II will be a more modern lens, sharper and better corrected, at the expense of some compromises in the bokeh.

It's simple, when I look at the samples of the new 85 GM, I instantly think of the rendering of my GM 35. I may be totally influenced by the fact that I know what lens I'm looking at though ^^

Yes, all I'm saying is that in typical 35mm usage (so not action specifically as you say) there is no meaningful difference between the two. Now, if we were talking about 50/1.2GM - that is fantastic AF (and 35GM is not in the same league).
Sorry, for that off-topic rant ...

Well, to me 85GM II looks more like a better 85DN but I might be wrong of course.

Maybe shooters can slap on a slight diffusion filter and still get the benefits of the mark II (AF, size reduction and LoCal improvement, IQ WO) and get the lens to be a little closer to v1

Excellent images by Galer, but the rendering is missing the luminousness and pastel-like contrast of the Spherical aberrations in the Ver. 1.

Rendering-wise these seem more akin to the 135GM and 35GM than the 85GM v1 and 24GM.

Then I look at these and see a lot of the same weaknesses as the MK1 in terms of flare and now I'm questioning what the benefit (to me) is from a rendering standpoint

How would you comare the rendering of the Sigma 35i and the Sigma 35/1.2? Does the i series 35 get close to the i series 45/28? How is the 35/1.2 different and, presumably, better?

35i renders similarly to the 35 1.2 and the 45i for sure. Same pleasant colors, contrast, and bokeh. F1.2 vs F2 of course is different, but the 35 1.2 also has a slightly longer than 35mm FOV, which lends more compression of of course blur.

35i has a hint of a glow wide open, though at as dramatic as the 45i, and definitely none of the focus issues of the 45i either.

I've been shooting with the 35i for years now so I'd say I'm happy with it. Renders well and no fuss to carry around and shoot with.
