p.1 #1 · What is the must-have FE lens in 24-70mm?

Thank you to everyone who has helped me on my journey so far.

I'm just a dad. Meaning, it falls to me to take photos of dad things. So I'm looking for a system befitting a dad photographing dad things.

[Edit]
I think the most challenging environment this would shoot would be active toddlers indoors across a table or across a living room. They would in-action portrait shots. I want to be able to take maximum advantage of the a7rv AF at low light in closer quarters with enough sharpness that I can crop when I need or want.
[End edit]

Currently, the kit consists of a7rv +sel70200gm2. Plan is to snag a 1.4x TC at some point as well.

I went with the sel70200gm2 because, in all my years of researching high(er) tech products, I do not recall another product so universally lauded as the sel70200gm2 at its FL range.

I think it makes sense to cover my bases and get a 24-70mm FL lens.

What is the sel70200gm2 of 24-70mm FL range? I don't mean "does Sony make a GM2 in the 24-70mm FL range", that's the sel2470gm2. I mean what's the king lens that covers me in around the 24-70mm FL range (if there is one).

I've been recommended:

Sigma 28-45/1.8 (thank you, GHarris)
Sigma 24-70 DG DN II Art (thank you, jrscls)
Sony's own SEL2470GM2 (thank you, Ross Martin)

I'd say the first option, but :
* it's not 24mm, so you don't get that ultra-wide angle look, it's not 70mm either, but here you can crop from [email protected] so it's easier
* it's tangibly bigger and heavier than the other options.
* it's better optically to my eye (IMHO art/gm prime-like), but the question is if you're gonna pixel peep that much...

a thought just occurred to me about the 28-45mm, why wouldn't I be better off with a 24mm prime at 61MP and crop my way to 48mm?

I did that as a test with [email protected] and you loose a lot of detail/resolution this way (not saying it's unusable but if you're contemplating these lenses I guess you're interested in IQ).

Here's a rough test shot where I simply enlarged area taken from 24mm to be similar in size to that area from 45mm:

It doesn't look that bad if you downsize the other way around:

The 28-45 is a high resolution lens, it really is prime like. Cropping 24mm on the a7R V to 48mm will put a serious hurt on resolution, but that may not matter to you. A 24mm prime will be smaller and lighter than the 28-45, and give you 24mm, but it won't replace the 28-45 without some compromises.

Again, not really trying to make a recommendation here, because I really don't know your priorities.

I'm trying to find out if there's a cant-miss lens in this FL like the sel70200gm2 in its FL range

The best lens for quality and versatility is the Sony 24-70GMii. Close runner up is the Sigma 24-70. You really won’t notice much difference in image quality, but the Sony is a touch lighter and smaller with GM build. I had the original Sigma 24-70/2.8 and loved it.

The Sigma 28-45 looks to be fantastic, but it’s far less versatile than a 24-70 and MUCH heavier. Better image quality, but for most of your dad photos you probably wouldn’t notice.

I’d get the Sony if you can swing it but the Sigma is really good and a lot less. You really can’t go wrong.

Really depends on what your priorities are. Do you need 24mm. Do you need a fast lens. What are you going to shoot? What do you do with the images you take.

There are many different must have lenses…depends on the person’s must.

If you're talking about family photos, I think you'll notice the aperture a lot more than any differences in sharpness between these lenses...

You can compare their IQ here:
https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=1693&Camera=1538&Sample=0&FLI=2&API=1&LensComp=1644&CameraComp=1538&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2
(copy & paste the link)

IMHO, 28-45 trounces any other standard-ish zoom when it comes to IQ.

I don't know that you can easily determine a "king of the heap" out of that group. The 28-45 is a very different lens from the 24-70s. Choosing it over the others gets you appreciable upticks in performance at like apertures in the shared range on top of the extra speed, but the downsides of the limited range and additional size and weight have to factor in there somewhere. I'd say you'd have to be really secure that you're going to be covered by the range before the benefits of the lens are meaningful.

Between the 24-70s, I prefer the Sony, but that has less to do with the optics than it does with ergonomics (the design of the Sony slims down toward the mount enough to give you a few extra MM between the grip and lens), the lighter weight, and the fantastic AF than it does with the optics. There are ways in which the Sony is significantly better, but it also takes on a bit more distortion to get there. I'd have a hard time recommending spending nearly twice the money specifically on those optical advantages, but, for the whole package, I'd say the GMII is worth it.

I still recommend the Sigma 24-70 DG DN II. Nearly same performance as the Sony for about half the price. I tried the GM II and think I prefer the Sigma in this case unless you need to have a Sony. The 28-45 would be too heavy and limited range for me. I would rather use a 35 GM and just crop to 45 if needed.

I had the 24GM and it's not as sharp as the other GM primes. 35GM on the other hand is my sharpest lens. I will regularly punch it into aps-c mode for 50mm.

For a zoom I'd think the practical vote goes for the Sigma 24-70 DG DN II, I sold the original because of weight and the focus was not accurate enough. The ver II changed the focus motors and slimmed down the weight. The optics were good. If money is no concern get the GM II. But is money is a concern get the Sigma or you could justify getting the Sigma and a 35GM for the same price as the 24-70 GM II.

If the next question for the group is for an ultrawide I would say get the 20G.

The Sony holy trinity of zooms is probably the 12-24/2.8 GM, 24-70/2.8 GM II and 70-200/2.8 GM II. My holy trinity might end up being the Sigma 14-24/2.8, 28-45/1.8 and Sony 70-200/2.8 GM II. For now I'll probably take the Sigma 65/2 and 105/2.8 macro (which I believe is my sharpest lens.)

Might want to settle on the 2 lenses and use them a bit before adding something wider. It may help inform your decision on what lens makes sense.

I have the original Sigma 24-70/2.8 DN and I like it a lot. If I was buying now though, it would be a choice between the Sigma 24-70/2.8 DN II and the Sony 24-70 GM II. I would need to investigate them more closely to decide if I thought the Sony was worth the extra money.

The Sigma 28-45/1.8 looks great but the combination of size, weight and limited zoom range puts me off it as an alternative to a 24-70.

FWIW I am a dad who photographs dad things.

I'm sorry, I'm having a dumb moment here.

The first two are L: 45mm R: cropped 24mm

The second two are what? How do you make the 45mm FL into 24mm FL?

Thank you. This is the plan exactly. Add the 24-70 and see if I'm really missing anything wider.
