p.1 #1 · Age old question - Sony 35/1.8 FE vs Sigma 35/2 DG DN C ?

I’m sure this topic has been discussed before but trying to decide what to carry in my travel bag.
I’m looking at the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 versus the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary.
The lens chosen will be used on a Sony compact C body of either the A7CR or A7CII.
It will be used as the faster prime along side the new Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G zoom. At this critical focal length I wanted something faster but the Sony 35/1.4 GM to me is just a little too big and heavy even though I own it.
What is the experience of others here on which lens to use? I’m a fan of aperture rings but the Sony is just smaller and lighter (even if not by much). The other lenses I’m thinking of carrying in the bag will be either Zeiss Batis 85/1.8 or Sigma 90/2.8 at the long end and hopefully the new Sony 16-25/2.8 G zoom for the wide end.
Please share your thoughts.

Admit this might be a flawed decision that may need rethinking and just carry the bigger/better GM lens.
If you think I should do that let me know.

Thank you for your time.

Absent any specific requirements, I don’t think there is really a right answer. I’ve used both and like them both…definitely understand it being a tough choice. I was happy with the IQ of the Sony, the AF is lightning fast as well. The Sigma is a pleasure to use.

Depending on how important size and weight are to you, you might also consider the Sony 40/2.5G. Not much of a speed advantage over the 24-50 but it is noticeably smaller than the two 35s. For me, I’ve landed on having both the 35GM and the 40G.

Thank you for your input. I’ve specifically ruled out the small Sony G primes at 24, 40, and 50 because I really wanted a lens at least as fast as f/2 to support nighttime if possible even though I actually own them still and love their size but trying to make the 24-50/2.8 G zoom work instead to eliminate the need for lens changes when out and about. I do like 40mm focal length and another lens I still own is the Zeiss Batis 40/2 CF. It’s really not only 40 grams heavier than the Sigma 35/2 but that’s going in the wrong direction. I use that on my A7RV still.

I don't think there is a right answer either, but personally I would have a strong preference for the Sigma over the Sony 35 f/1.8. I don't like the relatively high axial chromatic aberration on the Sony lens and the transition zone from in focus to out of focus which I find abrupt and harsh. Those are just my preferences, however. The Sony lens is very sharp. Focuses very fast, has low focus breathing, and loses very little in performance when focused close up. The Sigma lens has a slower and smoother (to my eyes) transition zone from in focus to out of focus, and the axial CA is less prominent. It isn't quite as sharp, however, and that is especially true near its minimum focus distance. So, it depends on what matters most to you, and I don't think there is one right answer.

I sold my Sony 35/1.8 and replaced it with the Sigma 35i because I prefer the look of the images, I like using an aperture ring, and the size/weight isn’t too much. I agree that the close focus sharpness is better on the Sony but otherwise I think the Sigma is at least as sharp. I’m sure there is some sample variation that could swing it either way but both are sharp enough at normal distances. I also have the Sigma 45/2.8 for when I want something lighter.

p.1 #6 · Age old question - Sony 35/1.8 FE vs Sigma 35/2 DG DN C ?

I have owned and used both 35s and agree with what others have said above. They are both good lenses and I have been happy with both.

In comparison:

The Sony 35/1.8 has excellent AF, weighs less, and shoots up to 30 fps on the latest Sony bodies. The IQ is very good, sometimes IMO a bit harsh and contrasty compared to the Sigma. The build quality is good, on par with the 28/2 and the 85/1.8.

The Sigma 35/2 has very good AF, weighs a small amount more than the Sony, and shoots up to 10 fps on the latest Sony bodies. The IQ is excellent and reminds me of the RX1R II images - colorful and smooth. The build quality is excellent, like all of the i-series lenses.

For me the decision came down to IQ (Sigma) vs AF speed and accuracy (Sony). I never dig figure out which one I liked best.

My solution was to go with the Sony 35/1.4 GM, which is the best 35mm lens that I’ve ever used. For times when I want a lighter load, I use the Sony Sonnar T* 35mm f/2.8 ZA which, IMO, has better IQ (Zeiss!) than the Sony 35/1.8 and the Sigma 35/2, weighs nothing, and is a tad slower than the two lenses in question.

YMMV

Interesting solution and one I could apply with a slight modification. Mark Galar, the Sony Ambassador, also suggested the FE 35/1.4 GM, which I mentioned I already own. That one will give me the best low light performance which is why I wanted to have a prime even though I will have the new 24-50/2.8 G in my bag all the time. I know the 35/2.8 ZA is great at what it is since I also used to own that lens when I first moved to the Sony system but I will hold off and not pick it up since I don’t want to add yet another 35mm to my kit since I already have three. That means for now keeping both the Sony 35/1.8 and the Sigma 35/2 and continue to let them battle it out for a permanent place in my bag. Who knows what I will end up deciding.

Thank you to all for sharing your experience and providing the feedback. Take care

Steve W.

Check out this thread, pick your favorite renderings and see if the Sigma or the Sony comes out better to your eye:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1685214/0

Personally, I was surprised that the Sigma and Sony were basically tied in how I thought they rendered.

I ended up buying the Sigma 35i later, but didn't really love the rendering enough. I then bought a 35GM to compare and found the GM was not that much larger, but basically better in every way with regards to the image quality. I think if you already own the 35GM, the Sigma 35/2 or Sony 35/1.8 is not going to be smaller enough to justify its place in your bag. Go another step smaller to the 35ZA or 40G. Or get a CV35 or 40/1.2, etc. These are more different and differentiate themselves as travel-size compared to the GM you own.

FWIW if I was going to buy a smaller, lighter, 35mm to add to a kit which already included a 35 GM, I think I'd probably go with the Samyang 35mm f/1.8. It's smaller, lighter and cheaper than the Sony f/1.8 or Sigma f/2 lenses. I've only tried one briefly in a store, but it seems to have pretty decent image quality too.

PS I also agree with the person who has already said you need to ask yourself whether the size and weight of any of these lenses is different enough from the size and weight of the 35 GM that it will really make a difference to you. Only you can answer that though, of course.

Every solution has its benefits, but for me the FE35F18 ticked the most boxes on my list. Actually the 35GM weights almost double of the f1.8! The rendering of the 1.8 is more simular to the Zeiss-lenses with strong contrast. For my use a well balenced and light allrounder. Used it as one lens solution on several scouting hikes.

p.1 #11 · Age old question - Sony 35/1.8 FE vs Sigma 35/2 DG DN C ?

@swldstn (We have many similar prime lenses and Sorry for so much about my kit and thoughts on it, but I have been going round and round on this for almost a year and have finally come up with my travel kit going forward.)

Having shot outdoor portraits in a bright and sunny desert areas for so many years I have come to rely on the CPL filter to warm up a persons skin during the day when the sun is the highest in the sky. Otherwise a persons skin tends to be a bit washed out. There is only 1 Sunrise, Sunset and Golden hour after-all each day and the CPL (and ND's) can improve others aspects of the photo, when shooting outside of these ideal times, as well. So when I travel I always bring my CPL and ND’s filters in a filter stack of like sizes. I am kinda anal about this and have 7 different sized stack sets of 3 to 5 high quality (mostly B&W) filters. For this reason I tend to group lenses by filter size, as the last thing I want is to travel with 3 or 4 different size lenses and filter stacks.

Mostly I am a prime guy, but last year I wanted a wide, but fast zoom to go along with my A7RIV, 50 f1.4 GM and Batis 85 as my travel kit on a 2 month long overseas trip (almost brought the 20 G and 35GM instead but glad I didn’t). Purchased the Tamron 20-40 f2.8, which is the same 67mm filter thread, and am extremely happy with the Tamron, it was my most used lens. If I need a wider perspective I would stitch a 3 shot wide vertical pano in camera.

Going forward with my new A7CR, these 3 lenses fit in my smallest bag, a PD 6L sling. This is the bag I will be using for travel when possible as I really don't want to carry more than 3 lenses on any given day. I can swap out the Tamron or 50GM for my 20G, 35GM, Batis 25 or Batis 40mm as needed and all use the same filter size. Plus the 61MP gives me the luxury of having extra reach with any lens. Yes I have 5 of the the Sigma I series primes, but since I went with the CR and not the CII, I want the best IQ lenses I have along with me (plus the Sigmas use 3 different filter sizes). Since I shoot with Manual Exposure, using the 3 control wheels of the A7CR for adjusting aperture, ss and ISO, not having an aperture ring or hold button on the lens is of no consequence to me, YMMV.

Steve, since you want both the new Sony 16-25 and 24-50 f2.8 lenses, adding them to a 35GM and Batis 85, might be too much. I would not be happy carrying this much weight on a daily basis while traveling with a smaller shoulder or sling bag. Since you mentioned bringing the Sigma 90mm instead of the Batis, I would then suggest the Sony 35 f1.8 over the Sigma 35 f2, as both of these use the same 55mm filter where the Sigma 35mm is yet another size. These 2 smaller lenses with the Sony zooms would be less weight and doable, but probably require a slightly bigger bag than 6L.

My answer was the 35ZA. Like you, i would prefer f2.0 rather than f2.8, but the ZA is so tiny and has excellent IQ, I'm prepared to stretch the point.

Last week I added the Sony 24-50 which is also f2.8 but of course gives the flexibility of multiple focal lengths when you want to travel light. Size and weight are comparable to a quality prime (e.g. less than the 35GM in fact)

Also have the 35GM and Batis 40 when wider aperture is required (and still debating whether to keep both or sell one of them, but that is a different topic!)

Like you I bought the new FE 24-50/2.8 G for its flexibility and like that it’s only 440 grams. Have both the Batis 40/2 and the 35GM which currently plan to keep both. The 35GM is 525 grams and the Batis 40/2 only 365 grams so more likely to take the Batis because it lighter unless I know I want the quality of the 35GM and it’s one stop improvement in speed.
When I add the 16-25/2.8 G it’s only 409 grams.

Certainly lots to choose from and any primes in this travel bag will get modified based on the trip’s purpose and duration. I.e. I view my Batis 85/1.8 as a portrait lens so that would be for people. Constantly considering changes based on the situation.

@SpecFoto thanks for pointing out the filter size issue. The two new Sony G zooms use 67mm filters as does my Batis 85/1.8 so that may influence me more than switching to the smaller Sigma 90/2.8 prime. Need to give that some thought. Also that might influence me to reconsider my Batis 40/2 CF which uses 67mm as well if I thought I needed a prime in the midrange. Prior to buying the zoom I setup my three lens kit with the Batis 25/2, 40/2, and. 85/1.8. Weight was not really an issue with the three lenses weighing in at 335, 361 and 475 grams but they were a little bit larger and didn’t have an aperture ring like I prefer. But they are great lenses.

Bag wise I go back and forth between a Moment Rugged 10L sling bag and the new Shimoda Urban Explorer 25L if I want to use a backpack because I am carrying a laptop or iPad. With the backpack I can also take both my A7CR and easy to add the A7CII. Tend to take that if an airplane is involved because I want a camera and a backup. The second camera typically stays back at the hotel but available in emergencies.

Thanks for all the great advice.

35/1.4 GM is a special lens, I'd go with that even if it weighs a tad more. And f/2 to f/2.8 isn't that big of a difference; use the zoom more on most occasions and then bring out the f/1.4 when you need low light or want to isolate more.

You own an entire store full of glass. Put that Loxia 35mm f/2.0 on it and get out there. Sign up for a workshop with Professor Hines in NYC. He uses Loxia all the time. Now THAT would be money invested well.

Challenge yourself, not your need for instant gratification.

Look at that! https://www.professorhines.net/

@Magnum PI, appreciate the feedback, right now I’ve been immobilized due to a foot injury, but maybe some time next year. The Loxia’s are great lenses but these years I’m using the excellent Sony AF system to help me out and ensure I capture an in-focus image. Also Zeiss support of these “legacy” lenses is not the best I’ve heard with the updated firmware on the newer bodies and it’s hard to find high quality used version of the 21mm that I used to own but mistakenly traded away. Never bought the 25mm or 85mm but I’m sure they great as well. Of course I need to sell a lot of glass but but hard to get to the post office these days so that will just have to wait.

Take care.

I currently own all three.

I shoot with the 35GM the most by far. It is just a great lens, and for me isn't too big for all day excursions with or without other lenses, IMHO. Now that I self gifted myself the A7RV this past Christmas, it is getting even more play as a crop mode 50 f/2. I know I shouldn't complain about the best all around 35 in the full frame world, but I occasionally wish it would render like the 24GM. I'm extremely fit and strong at 135lbs FWIW, is the size of the 35GM is a non issue in the bag or carrying.

I acquire the 35i on a lark when the local camera shop had one for sale at 40% less than the average FM B&S price and shoot it when the feeling strikes me. Our family Christmas card lead photo last year was taken by my daughter's girlfriend shooting into the sun and it came out great. AF is passable with the OG A9 and A7RV.

I have owned the FE35 for years and shot extensively with it before acquiring the 35GM a couple of years ago. I still really like it. But since adding the 35i, selling the FE35 is something I should do but haven't done, yet. Chalk it up to 100% procrastination. I have no reason to own this lens any longer.

I had a torn tendon in my foot that took me of said foot for a year. This knee walker linked below saved me. Used it for grocery shopping, getting into my car, working, getting into the water at the beach, repairs around the house, even mowed my grass with it and went up a few leaders.

It takes a couple days to get used to it.

I think best option for 35mm if you don't need autofocus is Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 Nokton SE. If you need autofocus... i had the sigma 35mm DN DG f2 and the Loxia 35mm, both not great at f2..... loxia better colors and render but softer and bokeh is average. Other option is Batis 40mm nice lens, light and good all-around lens.

Sony 35mm GM maybe the best but heavy to travel....

Best,
Carles.
