I just watched a video on the D-Lux 8 from one of the few who have shot one. When I saw the video sample of the street trolly I was kind of taken aback a bit. It showed really, really bad rolling shutter on a not very fast moving pan. To me that indicates a very slow scan speed on the sensor. Why in the World, at this price point is Leica using such a slow and dated sensor. It is only a micro 4/3 sized sensor and should not be that slow scanning in 2024.
Low tech sensor,
No weather sealing,
Plastic body,
unnecessarily low resolution due to lens design
dated rear screen and EVF specs
High price
My love of leica only goes so far. But I would really like a camera in this category.
Maybe I am being too skeptical. My local store says that there will be a long waiting getting this camera judging by the size of their pre-order list. Hmmmmm....
Start watching at about the 1:55 minute mark. This reviewer never even commented on how bad the rolling shutter is.
I made a preorder since why not but don’t think I would ever take delivery for what you laid out above. I was hoping it was more than what was in the rumors but don’t think so. I think the pre-order to delivery ratio will be pretty poor for this camera.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I think their Leica Lux camera app with a iPhone 14 or 15 pro max is a better option than this if you want a re-skinned Leica experience.

Anybody know why a used D-Lux 7 is selling for about the same as the price of a new D-Lux 8? Other than impatience it makes little sense.
Looking at ebay sold listings, the prices vary from under $800 to $1400
If a buyer is willing to spend $1400 on a 7 instead of $1500 on an 8, I have a feeling they have no idea the 8 is coming out!
Thx for your reply. I see a few commercial sites - MPB for example - selling the d-lux 7 for about the same as an 8. But at MPB there are about a dozen! So someone must be asleep at the switch!
I actually might give it a whirl. Expecting it to be a replacement for a high end camera is a bit of a stretch. I had a D Lux 7 and it was a pretty good camera. I bought it used and only sold it because I end up selling most of my cameras eventually (but that's another problem I won't get into....).
I use Leica SLs now and the lenses are big and heavy. Having this to stroke my Leica ego as an easy to carry camera would be good. Also, it just looks good to me. Price isn't that bad in my opinion. Contrary to some comments, the body IS NOT plastic. It's magnesium. While I wasn't allowed to take any pictures, I did handle one briefly and it seems to be pretty well made. We'll see.
My only comment about any of the P&S cameras regardless of manufacturer, is I always feel like there is a certain fragility to the lens mechanisms as they extend for use. I had that issue with a Sony RX100 years ago. Anyway, it seems like these sorts of cameras are going the way of the Dodo and I think that's a shame.
"Buying from an authorized Leica dealer guarantees genuine products, full manufacturer's warranty, and best in class customer service.
What class are they talking about?"
I hear you Desmo. I had an issue with my M11 when I got it - there were spots on the sensor that did not easily come off with gentle cleaning. A friend bought one at the same time and we both had that problem. I sent mine off to Leica NJ and they sent it back with spots still on the sensor.
Via the dealer where I bought the M11 I was able to contact a senior person at Leica US and they took care of it within a week. So yes, I have issues at times with Leica service, but on this occasion they delivered.
A shout out to Tom Gramegna at Bergen County Camera (one of the oldest Leica dealers in this US by the way - terrific dealer and gentleman) for helping me solve the problem. So good service is still out there - sometimes you have to prod it into action...

I actually really liked the pic samples he posted. I have no interest in video. Hmm, this looks like a really nice camera and @crf59 mentioned he handled it and it was made out of magnesium not plastic. Which makes much more sense to me as Leica is all about the feels..
I still own a LX-100 original 12MP, paid $900 for it in 2015?. I loved the camera. The lens range and speed are perfect for me. Easily better in low light than my iPhone XX Pro. It is a bit sad that Leica didn't swap in a better sensor. I had no issue with the lens but I don't pixel peep with these type of cameras or my phone. It's a daily carry, shoot indoors and out, pocket camera. I combed over B&H's site and tried to find another camera I'd rather buy with these P&S size & specs. I didn't find one. Used LX-100 II's are still listed for $1000 used (same as they were new). So this being the only new camera in this spot, although overpriced, will have followers.
I doubt Panasonic will make one as someone said they're out of this market segment. Funny on their website they show all their old P&S but you can't buy any of them, . If they did it would most likely have there old/current layout which IMO is not user friendly. It the main reason why I don't use my LX-100 anymore. The D-Lux 8 has a few good upgrades and the Leica menu will make it a way more easy and fun camera to shoot. But add the grip and tax you're at $2000, ! I really want to see how good the Wi-Fi & USB-C file transfer works. This is another reason my LX-100 sits.
I know there are many who will make fun of anyone who buys this camera as they already have. There are also those who will buy it because it's a "Leica" (made in China). But if you go out and take pictures with it because it's an easy and fun camera then who really cares? It's your own $$. Waiting for some vids from people who buy the camera and really compare it to the LX-100 II/D-Lux7 functionality, menu user experience, image transfering, etc. The image quality will be the same which is good enough for me.

My #1 rule for photo gear is not on the spec sheet, but will I enjoy using it?
Exactly, it looks like a very fun camera. The ergos, and interfaces should provide a good bit of that leica shooting experience I enjoy so much. Mine arrives on Monday!

Excellent! Looking forward to your impressions and the pics you will take with it.
