Even though it's still pretty cold up there (well cold for me in Tucson), it was warm enough that I risked a trip up the mountain to do some more shooting in one of my new favorite spots. Here are a few from the day:
#1: This small arch has been interesting for me to shoot it a few times now.
#2: This rock formation is one of my favorites. I'm planning a shoot with a long lens so I can get a big moon rising between the two rocks at the top, but that doesn't look like it will pan out until this summer (according to photopills).

Oooh. That spot looks like it’d provide endless image opportunities.
It really does. I've driven by the little pull off at the trailhead that leads here for years wondering what was there. I finally decided to check it out. Getting up there was tricky, getting down in the dark was even harder. Luckily I found an alternate, and much easier route on my second visit. There's so much going on up there. I'll be shooting that site for ages.

Great stuff! Only been up there once, but it was surreal knowing the saguaro desert is right below you. The sudden shift in biome is almost shocking.
So true. It's what makes the mountains out here so amazing. They call them sky islands because the flora/fauna at the top is so different from the "ocean" of desert below. All kinds of interesting "Galapagos" like evolution happens on the various mountain tops. And you pass through so many different biospheres on your way up. It's a great spot.

I wish I had been more into photography when I lived there, so many beautiful areas to capture! I enjoy your images from the area, brings back the nostalgia of my teenage years. Which direction are you facing in the last image? It looks vaguely familiar, but I can’t quite place the location.

Thanks for sharing,
So this spot is just above Windy Point and Geology Vista on the west side of the Catalina highway. That last view is looking almost due west (maybe a touch south of due west). There are great views in all directions from here and you are actually sitting maybe 40 feet above the highway in the rock formations. It's great.

The Black & White picture looks like the perfect set for a 50's Sci-Fi flick.
Did not know such a place exists so close to Tucson. Nice!
Thanks! This spot really is a great find. Just above Windy Point, the Catalina Highway starts to wind along a ridge, running between all of these great rock formations. This one pull off just happens to also be a sort of trailhead for getting up among the rocks on foot. There's so much to shoot up there, and it's empty... I've only seen other people up there once so far, although it's obvious that other people do get up there from time to time. It's a great spot, for sure.

Wow!! Very nice indeed! I live here and have been up Mt. Lemmon at least 100 times (including twice by bike...so far). But I've never found that spot. Looks awesome.

This is a little out of the way, but it's just past Windy Point. I've driven by it a zillion times and always thought about stopping at the pull off to see what was up. I finally decided to check it out and boy was there a huge payoff.
