I have Fuji X100V. It has good enough image quality. Fuji pictures are ok even when shown alongside with picture take with full frame Sony cameras.

But what I tried to say that despite some noise etc. 1" sensor cameras produce "real" pictures in RAW. Call me old school if you want but I think there is certain difference to pictures produced in phones.

You can shoot RAW with an iPhone too. As for "real" pictures, you can process files even from a MF camera to oblivion. Are they any more "real" then?

Interesting perspectives here.
I'm definitely coming from a different place. I got rid of my FF SLR camera years ago because I just wasn't lugging it around. And when I was lugging it around I wasn't terribly enthusiastic about processing & cataloging. The iPhone changed everything for an active life. The best images are the ones you take with the camera you have with you. On a bike, on skis, at a party, in a museum, at a concert, the one in the pocket actually gets used. And pics that go straight to the worlds best cataloging system in your phone and are super easy to share is definitely nice.
That said, some images just suck with a phone. Scenics with poor light. In the woods with shadows. Action shots without a viewfinder.
And a $1000+ phone makes sense from a supercomputer linked to the entire world perspective. But a $1000+ cameraphone that's constantly dirty and jiggliing around in my pocket with keys and grime means the lens will be awesome on day one and considerably less awesome on day 365.
So the temptation to get something small like an rx100 is high when the price point gets closer to half of a new iPhone.

I shoot with RAW on my iphone when I don't need the computational photography exposure blending.

I have owned both.

Personally I find that the computational photography feature tends to give me odd looking images that don’t hold up to closer inspection for kid photography

This is why I carry a FF camera, and a f/1.4 prime for low light

I suppose if you are shooting a stationary object, the computational photography works fine

Regarding noise peformance, the more you zoom in past 24mm, the better the rx100 gets relative to the iPhone.

That said, as per my previous post I am firmly In the iPhone camp. I don’t think the rx100 sensor is big enough

No matter what, you will always have your phone on you. Will that be true with a separate camera? So why add extra items to carry around if they won’t be used all the time? Also, the RX100 line is outdated as there were no updates for over 3 years or so I believe. Sure, the image quality when viewed at 100% will still be better with RX100 but nothing else. Quickly, you will find liking the “more” dynamic range, achieved by exposure stacking’ of the iPhone. This is done right there on the phone, no need to wait until you get to the computer. Another plus of the iPhone is that it is somewhat waterproof. You can easily shoot in the rain or not to worry much when you drop it into the water. Can you do the same with the RX100?

One of the biggest advantage of the iPhone 15 Pro over the 14 Pro is the USB-C connector. Faster transfers as well as ability of simply connecting a SSD to backup your photos. Of course slightly faster processor and better video as well.
Apple also stated recently that the iPhone 15 batteries have a longer lifespan than initially thought - https://9to5mac.com/2024/02/20/iphone-15-battery-lifescyle-span/

Instead of getting a RX100 that will require you to take extra batteries, charger, cable, memory cards etc, I would suggest on getting an extra battery bank for your iPhone. I’ve stopped taking my RX100 with me hiking, few years ago, as I liked iPhone photographs much better. These were just snapshots for memory sake of course. If I was to take photographs to sell/print, I would definitely take a better camera with me, full frame and few lenses.

Disney on Ice by acurian, on Flickr

This is what you can expect out of the iPhone 15 at 120mm (5x lens)
120mm equivalent, f/2.8, 1/60s, iso 400

This was done on FF at a similar focal length, and 4x higher iso
108mm, f/2.8, 1/500s, iso 1600

The 1" sensor on the rx100 is 13.2 x 8.8mm

The iPhone uses a 1/1.28 (9.8x7.3mm) sensor, which has 61.5% of the surface area

Therefore as an estimate you should be able to print 34% bigger with the rx100 and get similar sharpness (13.2mm / 9.8mm = 1.34x)

This means that instead of an 8" print on the iphone you can do 10.7" one using the 24mm lens. Personally this is not big enough a difference for me to carry the rx100 over the iphone... Most of us here use FF cameras.

However, do note the iPhone's 5x camera is only 4.5x3.4mm, which is

Isn’t this only the main camera?

The iPhone struggles indoors, too much for my taste. On top of that, mixing phone duties with camera can be annoying.

I thought my iPhone 15 Pro Max could suffice for travel duty and took it on a couple of trips, leaving my Sony kit at home. At first it seemed amazing… what it could do in low light without a tripod was absolutely amazing. The focal range also seemed great with three discreet lenses.

But then I got home and was pretty disappointed. Anything looks good on a 4” screen. When you put the image on a much larger 4-5K display it becomes clear that you’re looking at photos from a phone. I forget the specs of the various sensors on the 15 Pro Max but you’re only getting decent resolution at one focal length. Two of the cameras are low pixel count and everything else is a digital crop. There’s zero latitude for cropping, the JPEGs have very limited adjustment latitude, especially those in low light, and the Apple RAW looked to have worse resolution or something than the jpeg files - there was something off about them. They also didn’t have much latitude to work with. In the end, my phone will be fine for the food and drink photos my wife wants on every trip, but I won’t be using it anymore as the main tool for documenting our trip.

Interestingly, my wife thinks the photos taken on the iPhone these last two trips are perfectly fine, and she thinks I’m crazy for going back to my Sony kit. She just can’t see the difference. It’s all perspective.

Are iPhones that much better than Google Pixel 8Pro? Because I still find my Ricoh GRiii pictures are way better than Google Pixel 8Pro even with good light when seen on a 32" monitor. My A7Riv pictures are on another level compared to my GRiii.

I went to Patagonia last month and had one friend take pictures with his Ricoh GRiiix and his iPhone 15 ProMax. He took most of his pictures with his iPhone as he wanted to share them instantly with his group of friends and also he thought they looked amazing compared to what he saw on his camera LCD vs iPhone screen. After he came home he saw on TV his unedited Ricoh pictures and AI-enhanced iPhone pictures and he regrets not using his Ricoh more.

If you are going to be happy with what you see on the phone screen, then you can't beat the convenience of traveling with just a phone.

I got the RX100 VI some months ago thinking it was going to be a nice addition as a travel camera for my iPhone. I took a cruise just after getting it and honestly wasn’t impressed. During the day the photos were maybe slightly better than the iPhone, but with low light the camera couldn’t match the iPhone.

I sold it a month later.

To be fair the rx100 does maintain the image quality throughout its zoom range, while the iPhone image quality goes to shit below “1x” and above “2x”

That’s a valid point. Forgot to mention the fake bokeh. While it’s getting better, I’m not a fan. Also the latest 5x zoom they added is pretty bad.

I think I could’ve said it better. If I’m going to bring another camera besides my iPhone, I would just take my full frame and have considerable better photos.

One thing that hasn’t been pointed out here is that with the 24-200 equivalent lens and the lack of shutter lag compared to the iPhone, you are able to take action shots with the RX100vii that would be impossible with the 135 equivalent lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. I’ve taken photos of my friends windsurfing with my RX100vii and my iPhone 15 Pro Max and there is no comparison.
