p.1 #11 · Those who have Q3 and Fuji 100V1…..detailed impressions? | |
I have both.. not sure this is very detailed, but I'll give you my quick bullets..
IQ - Just better on the Q3. Better lens, better sensor, more detail. I also very much like the Leica highlight-weighted metering.. metering options of Fuji have just always frustrated me.
AF - Actually the Q3 here is much better. No dot-matrix printer sound, and the variety of focusing modes seems to be wider and more accurate on the Q3. Of course the Q3 has had 12+ months of FW updates, etc.. so time will tell here, but I even find tracking to be superior on the Q3 vs X100VI.
EVF - Larger, better on the Q3. Clearly the optical one is better on the VI
Build quality - Q3 wins again.. feels far more substantial and solid in your hand. The VI is quite a bit smaller and lighter.
Ergonomics - Probably a tie, though from a button layout perspective I like the Q3. From a more buttons to customize / configure, the VI wins IMO.
Film Sims / "Looks" - X100VI kills the Q3 here. I like the Q3 / Leica HC BW, but the variety of ease of changing film sims on the VI is amazing. I love Reala Ace and and Acros with the option for color filters.
I personally prefer the 28mm over the 35, but I will say the MFD on the 35/2 pretty much negates the macro mode on the Q3 and I don't need to bother with fiddling with the lens to go into macro mode.
So, IMO, pretty much what you'd expect from $6k vs $1,500.
Despite all this, I haven't decided which to keep. Here's what I struggle with.
IQ - Yes, Q3 is better. But how much better? I see the sharpness difference at 100%, but at web resolution or even prints from a few feet away..? Is the satisfaction of pixel peeping sharpness worth it?
Film Sims - I shoot GFX as well. I love having consistency in color / output across bodies. The flexibility I get with recipes and sims is something I really enjoy, and I don't get much of that capability with my Q3 / M11 setup.
Size - X100VI is more portable and lighter. Neither is huge, but when traveling all the weight adds up.
28 vs 35mm - This one is tough for me. I have the WCL-II adapter. Put it on, and it's nearly the size of the Q3. I also then have to mess with taking my square hood off, dealing with the adapter ring, etc.. I like the flexibility of 28mm @ 60MP much better.
OVF - I can see and frame much better at night. Even with the updated Q3 EVF, it's still not at the level of say the SL2 or GFX 100ii or Sony A1.. OVF is handy.
Creativity - Outside of B/W shooting (I do very much love the Leica HC B/W), the X100VI allows me to be much more creative and control things that I feel are important to framing a shot an interpreting a scene.
High ISO - With Pure Raw this is pretty irrelevant for me, if I need to rescue a horrible noisy image I can.. I don't like how dithered and pixelated Fuji files get at high ISO, a ton of lost detail when you zoom in, but really that's only 6400+. Q3 isn't stellar here either, but if you shoot JPG and need high ISO, I think the Q3 wins here.
Overall for me it comes down to this..
35mm (con) + film sims (pro) + $4,500 (pro) vs 28mm (pro) + overall IQ (pro) + $4,500 more (con)
Jury is still out.. it's day by day at this point some days I feel strongly the Q3 wins, then I flip the next day..
I think rivaling the Q3 and 1/3rd the price point is an amazing result for Fuji.
