The only thing I see wrong with your import process is you do not have any files selected. You need to either check the box under each preview or select Pick All to actually import them.
Make sure the files actually imported to your catalog. The way you have your import settings C1 will be referencing your library. To verify click on Library then look for a drop down called Folders, in there should be the C: drive with a number next to it. If there is no number next to it you have no pictures in your catalog.

i'm baffled b/c it appeared your import process is correct.
So am I!
Yes, I have the same problem if I import pictures from my C drive.

This is just a screenshot to show my settings. Trust me, when I import pictures I know I have to tick the boxes below them

You don’t by any chance have some kind of cloud service enabled on Desktop? I can imagine it uploading files and leaving a thumbnail behind.
No, I don't use any cloud services. The photos/catalogs are on my desktop.
Thanks again for the continued interest in my problem! I would like to ask one more thing.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Capture One, but at the last reinstall I noticed that the program had already found its license key and authenticated itself. I guess this means that the license key (and possibly other data) remained after the uninstall. If I want to make sure that every trace of Capture One is erased, in order to have a really fresh new installation - what should I do?

This is correct. I know how they’re doing it, but don’t want to broadcast such information publicly. It isn’t a directory full of program or configuration files you’ve missed. And it isn’t anything dodgy or undocumented-by-Apple that would compromise your system. You should do nothing – it is highly unlikely to be your problem.

So, I did the whole uninstall, restart computer, install dance again. This time, Capture One asked for my license code - but the same problem remains.
hmm.. i assumed you deactivated the express license from your account?
were your able to see the express license in your account? did it show the license is deactivated?
it's a step in the right direction when you're prompted for the license key.

I ran into an unusual and very long waiting time before Support reacted to my Service Request.
In a facebook user group Jack Williams of Capture One responded to me, saying - and I quote: "The support teams have certainly been affected (by the recent restructuring), but I don't like to make excuses and I'd still like to help. May I point you in the direction of the user to user forum? Maybe some other users (or myself) can assist".

I missed this, and my earlier post about the llicensing applied to Mac. However, the harmless method they use on macOS woud also be possible on Windows. Anyway, you seem to have eliminated that possibility by testing.

Have you actually tried exporting any of the affected files as TIFF or JPEG and viewing them in another program (e.g. a browser) to see whether your edits were applied? If it’s only the preview affected, that would suggest a problem with wherever Capture One is putting its cache or, as someone over at the Capture One forums suggested, with your video card.

well, @Termite didn't have any issues with the express version.

That's weird! Exporting works - I get a full resolution image, with edits applied. Now I'm even more confused.
I still can't use the program, because I can't see my edits when I'm working. They are only visible in the small thumbnail in the browser strip, and in the main window the image is in hopelessly low resolution.

oh, so the low rez thumbnail is displayed in the viewer, while the full rez as a thumbnail in the browser.
there must be a way to toggle the 2 views. but, i had never adjusted the defaulted view. perhaps someone can chime in with the instructions.
during the sw install, were you prompted to customize or choose the layout of the workspace?
