p.1 #1 · Photography in Morocco - a Report

Friends,

My family and I just returned from a 10-day trip to Morocco, and I thought I'd send a report. To start, we had a great time. The country is beautiful and picturesque, and the people are friendly. We had a driver and guide, which definitely made the trip less stressful, but are not necessary, esp. if you speak French.

Photography-wise, I had no problems. I brought my Sony a7rv, Sigma 14-24 f2.8, Sony 24-70 f2.8, and a tripod. I had been warned that authorities did not appreciate "professional" photographers working w/o a permit (I'm an amateur), and even though I carried pro gear, nobody besides my guide commented on my gear. I saw many DSLRs, but I don't think I saw any people carrying pro-type gear. I was able to photograph to my heart's content, although I avoided photographing people, except at a distance. For that purpose, I wish I had brought my Sony 70-200.

That said, as a monarchy, Morocco is, essentially, a benign police state. Police were ubiquitous, and they conduct random stops. I avoided photographing police, government buildings, or anything associated with public order. There was plenty to occupy me anyway.

Morocco is in the midst of a terrible drought, but it's not a desert, as depicted in the movies. It is mountainous, lush in places, and highly photogenic. The Roman ruins at Volubilis were a particular delight. Dust wasn't a problem, and the (winter) weather was delightful. The country has a rich history, and learning about the historical interplay between Jews, Muslims, and Christians, was fascinating. I recommend the country as a photographic, or just a tourist, destination.

Attached, in no particular order, are a few (OK, more than a few) pix, which I hope give a sense of what we experienced and enjoyed.

Steve

Thank you, New.
I went to high school in Syosset - many wonderful wildlife shooting opportunities on Long Island.

These are really some outstanding images! IMHO if we could get out to other non Western countries and display this type connection, the World would be a better place!
The hot air balloons are wonderful and to me, unique in that Country!
America is such a "child" in its evolution as a Country. The ancient architecture is a story into its own and you have displayed it well!
Thanks for the journey!

You captured the breadth of Morocco very nicely. Well done. Yes, photographing people in Morocco can be a very touchy issue. Best ask before you shoot.

Thanks all for your kind comments. Re: photographing people, I asked some kids if I could photograph them and they said no, because they didn't want their pictures to be on Facebook. They were right to worry!

Nice to heard a firsthand account of photography in a foreign country. I'd love to go here someday. Great to enjoy it through you photos.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. I was in Morocco a number of years ago and really enjoyed it. It is not a "benign police state", but is a beautiful country with a complicated history.

dude,
It definitely has a complicated history but the people are proud of their country and eager to share its culture. I recommend it.

Thanks for your post. It reminded me of a one month stay many years ago including many days with the Berbers in the Atlas Mountains. I fear many of those villages were demolished with the earthquake in 2023. During COVID I made a book detailing many images.

Thanks, Grove. We journeyed to the Atlas Mountains for a couple of day trips. We saw some damage but it was more along the line of a building or a few suffering damage. Fortunately, it did not appear that the damage was all that widespread, at least from what we saw.
