Nikon can't, unfortunately, make a custom lens with tailored specs for every user.

I would like to see Nikon make 180/2.8, 200/4 MC, 200/2, 300/2.8 and 300/4 Nikkors for the Z mount, as well as a full set of tilt/shift lenses. :-)

For me a lack of primes in the 180-300mm range is strange as these focal lengths are among my most used and favourite lenses. I am glad that they do make the 135/1.8 and 400/4.5 as these appear to be really nice lenses, but I can't unsee the gap in between.

They need the 300 2.8, and 200 F2 to make it to Z mount. As for the 800 PF , I don't think anyone else makes a comparable lens, there must be a reason why.

Unfortunately, IMO, I think the popularity and quality of the 70-200 f/2.8 zooms has made pretty much all manufacturers reluctant to make these primes. For Nikon you also have the 120-300 f/2.8 zoom competing with such primes too. Of all the new mirrorless lenses there is only one such prime lens (the recently introduced Sony 300 f/2.8) that has been made. Perhaps this suggests some reason to hope for such lenses in the future, but for about 20 years these particular primes do not seem to have gotten much attention at all from any manufacturer.

The reason these are delayed is likely because indoor sports photography is where mirrorless cameras took the longest time to get as good as DSLRs and still the D6 is better than the Z8 in my experience in this area (having shot them side by side). Also because of Covid restrictions there was a shortage of opportunities for sports and similar event photography and this likely affected sales negatively. The lenses are coming as Sony just recently introduced their 300/2.8, Canon and Nikon have their 100-300 and 120-300's which are catering to the same market but much heavier and much more expensive. Nikon might make a Z 120-300 but I hope the small sales volumes of that lens will make them bring around to bring out FL 300/2.8 (and hopefully also 200/2) for Z. A 70-200/2,8 obviously makes images that are nothing like those from the 300/2.8. Anyway the 200/2 and 300/2.8 work excellently but it would be nice to get the huge weight savings that are now possible with the latest optical technologies, as shown by the Sony 300/2.8's example.

Many on this forum are not interested in these focal lengths because many if not most here seem to mainly photograph birds. Eventually, event and sports photography will recover and there will be a market for 300/2.8's.

I went out hoping to photograph owls for the first time and was very lucky to find some short eared owls around sunset. All taken with the 1.4x TC.

This shot was taken from about 1,000 ft away from the tree/owl. The silos are about a mile away from where I was.

I think it was 3300 ish , just the lens, caps , and third party foot. So about 1500 less than new price. Pretty good deal.

Here I was thinking I got a good deal on mine for $200 below MSRP. That's crazy. What was the condition rated as?

oops and hood was also included , it was listed as 'excellent condition' . Pretty good deal , not the best I've seen on a long Z tele , sometimes they make mistakes.

Yeah, I wonder if they intended to list it for $4,300 and fudged the price. 10% off MSRP for a very recently released lens makes a lot more sense than 32% off.

I’m going to Tampa Bay next month, and will be spending a day at Ft. DeSoto. Thinking I may bring just the 600PF (and 1.4 TC). Viable?

I'm only assuming that you've never been there. If so, I would tell you no way I'd want just a 600. From my past experiences there I often found 300mm too long. I'm certainly not saying you won't get some great images at 600mm but it will be rather limiting as the birds are very, very tolerant. Of course you can always back up
This is a pretty routine shot from my experiences there. Of course, technically it's at 450mm but you get the idea.

I may have spoken out of turn. I just realized I'm referring to ten years ago, last time I was there I'm assuming it hasn't changed much but who knows. Hoping someone else that's been there recently might chime in for you. That spot never disappointed. I don't see how you could go wrong with the 180-600. Hoping to get back there myself one of these days.
Good luck !

Yeah, here in Wisconsin I’m just so used to fighting and clawing tooth & nail to get even the briefest glimpse of a bird, even with my 800mm, so I have a hard time imagining it being so drop-dead easy that birds get so close that a 100-400 is all you need!
