Hi folks, can somebody take a measurement from me please? More specific the total length without the lens hood of the Z8 with the 600mm PF attached on it?
Thank you already.
From the lens cap to the end of the EVF eyepiece it is just under 13.75 inches.

Thank you folks, the 600mm S PF f/6.3 just joined the family
I am now looking for a shoulder bag that can hold a Z8, this 600mm and perhaps the 24-120mm f/4 but on the right track.

How are you getting this level of "magnification? Are you cropping? Are you using a 1.4X TC? Are you using an extension tube? Or is it all of the above?
Hello Bill, this was done by cropping using approximately 25% of the original resolution of the Z9. So no use of TC or extension tube.

I am not sure I understand your question, but I will try to answer.
I set up a target (stuffed animal) at a fixed distance to tripod mounted lens. Looked at what portion of the frame is covered by the target. No cropping involved. Looked at the effect of adding an extension tube while not changing target distance. I was surprised how much that increased the target size of Sony 200-600 but at a cost of CA outside center. Comparing image size of 200-600 to 600PF the PF target is so much bigger it like adding a TC without actually adding one. Not quite a 1.4x but something like 1.2ish. I also did some testing with both ext tube and tc

@billsnature, it was your question - not mine and I answered it.
You will not fill the sensor with small birds like the goldcrest. With a MFD of 4 meters and a magnification of 0.15x that is not a surprise. Still the 45MP sensor allows for cropping.

I just got back from a wild 2 weeks mainly in South Carolina, with 2 days spent in Kentucky. It was a family trip, so photography took a backseat but I still ended up getting out pretty consistently.
I brought 2x Z9, the 400 2.8 TC, 600 PF and 800 PF. Of 7800 images taken, 600 were 400 2.8, 1500 were 800 pf, and the rest were 600 pf. Partially because I went out of my way to use the 600 pf for testing, and partially because I just gravitated to that lens as the most fun wildlife lens I've ever used. The 600 PF is the only lens in my kit that I have marked as an absolute will not sell. I have begun the process of flipping coins to see if I sell the 400 2.8, 800 pf, or both...
I'll be the first to admit that when the 600 pf released I thought "that's a dumb lens at a dumb price", and I am fully eating my words on it now. I was able to easily walk 5+ miles a day (which for me, is a big deal) with no inconvenience with that lens. it allowed me the opportunity to see so much more wildlife than I would've with any of my other bigger lenses. I was also able to quickly get prone, for eye level water shots, and jump back up to maneuver for anything else needed.
The 6.3 aperture didn't limit me as much as I expected. My main lens prior was the 400 2.8, so I thought coming from 2.8 would be impossible. However, what I didn't account for is that I prefer to handhold - and in low light, the 600 6.3 actually gave me better results because I could handhold it more than 3 stops slower shutter speed with a higher success rate. IE 600 PF at 1/6s vs 400 TC @ 1/50s. This was apparent when shooting screech owls in pre-dawn conditions.
My favorite thing about the 600 6.3 after the weight, is the background rendering. it just looks super visually appealing to me

I took my 600mm PF on his maiden trip yesterday and this in combo with the Z8. One of the birds that was willing to pose nicely was the Eurasion sparrowhawk

Beautiful shots. It's good to see the ZF getting great results as I'm looking to pick up the 600PF or 180-600mm for mine. How was tracking the caracara with the non-blackout free EVF? Did you use mechanical shutter? How significant are the differences in sharpness between the 180-600mm and 600PF (at 600mm f6.3)? Do you own the Z8/Z9 and notice the significant drop in resolution when switching to the ZF?

My first trip out with my newly acquired Z8 and 600 PF. Not the best conditions but I was able to find a nice variety of birds to test it out with. Still getting the hang of the AF system and controls coming from the Z7ii.
