I mostly missed the Sierra Nevada this summer while we were busy elsewhere. I finally got back into "my" mountains during the last week or so of the season, and then I returned during the second and third weeks of October to chase the fall aspen color. Here are a few of the photographs from the latter visits. (They have or soon will appear at my website, accompanied by additional background material, and alongside other photographs that don't appear here on FM.)

I always appreciate your honest post processing. Beautiful colors without over saturating. Thanks for sharing scenes with their real beauty. Eric.

Really like the last one. Looks like one of those spots you "bookmark" looking forward to an autumn color opportunity.

Thanks to all of you.
About saturating: It may tell you something about how much some people saturate when I tell you that I do increase saturation and correct color balance in my photographs. These are most definitely not SOOC images! I just try to make the result believable and congruent with what we recall from seeing these places and subjects.
About that last spot: A story/admission. I made this photograph at spot that I've been visiting for perhaps two decades. I _thought_ I knew it pretty well, but sometimes thinking that can make us lazy about observing. Anyway, as I looked over this area I spotted the remains of a very old mine in the bottom of the canyon, something I had not noticed before. That caused me to spend a little extra time looking in the general direction of that site... and soon I spotted this little creek descending the steep slope from a higher lake. I could not believe that I had never noticed it before!

Nice work. The last one is also my favorite, thanks for the nice little back story - great to find a new angle on old haunts.

Excellent work on these, Dan.
Thanks.
It is easy to think that the old places will not reveal anything new, but I always find something new there. While I love photographing places and subjects that are new to me, there's something special about building a relationship with a subject over years or even decades.
About the Sierra color: That show is pretty much over now, though I'm still going through the photographs I brought back. There is likely still some cottonwood color down low, but the aspens are done. However, now attention can turn to the western slopes of the range, including places like Yosemite Valley, which typically come into form starting about right now!

BTW, I just realized that in some threads more than half of the posts are by the person who created the thread! I'm resisting the temptation to use separate posts to respond to every person who comments... even though I recognize that doing so is a fine technique for making it look like there's more engagement. ;-)

Thank you to both of you!
I’ll probably share more of the autumn Sierra photos here eventually… but for anyone who is interested, I continue to share them on my website and on social media, where I post as “gdanmitchell,” too.
