p.1 #1 · Mountain Schoolgirl

A mountain girl returning from school on a mountain road in Himachal Pradesh, India. My driver said it took her over an hour to walk one way to school. She seemed quite happy and light-hearted. The views were spectacular, as the picture suggests!

Another sweet Portrait Charley! Only nit I see here is since the feet were cropped off, I think I'd crop this maybe just above the rock in lower left.

Thanks, Doug. So at her thighs rather than so close to the feet? I tried not to cut off at the knees, or cut her off too close to the feet (I thought the pants sort of made it less egregious), but I see what you mean here.

Another memory Charles!
Do these people go "shoeless" at times?

Thanks Charles! It gives me a more wider insight into the peoples of that part of the World. I have posted a picture of Cambodian Montagnard girls shoeless and the Hmomgs also from 1967. I just wondered if any other peoples walked "shoeless". Got to have very caloused feet to endure the plants and stuff that grows out of the ground.
Thanks!
Dan

Yes, indeed. It also makes them more in touch with the ground, and their natural habitat. I have often thought that in the West we are less in touch with the natural forces that surround us. A few times, I ate only with my fingers as the locals here do, and it was an enlightening experience. I actually touched my food! It was a whole other level of gustatory experience.

Well Charles, if it is BBQ ribs I eat with my fingers! Fried or BBQ chicken also. When I served in SE Asia, rice, veggies and maybe some fish were my teams meals for 2 years. There was a very valid reason for NOT eating American food, MRE, C or K rations..whatever. That was a BIG NO-No!!!
We also ate with our fingers or chop sticks. That also was true when we were back at a regular "chow hall".
Thanks much brother! The World can be a small place at times. While I can't say I enjoyed 2 of my 6 yrs in the military, I did learn very much about indigenous peoples of SE Asia and how to treat them.
We ALL bleed red!

So true, Dan. There is much more that unites us than separates us!
