Congratulations to DanielScott for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 6 votes - View Previous Winners

Earlier this month I had a long awaited reunion with my favorite photography subject—my best friend. We explored an abandoned space near his new residence in Illinois and captured some pretty cool shots. I've genuinely missed these photo shoots since he relocated from Oregon to Illinois earlier this year, so it was great to hang out and be creative with him again after not seeing each other for several months. Our shoots are really just meant to be fun for the sake of making something, and typically I like to use shoots like this to experiment a bit with lighting and color toning. Typically he likes to use these shoots to bolster his dating profiles.

Canon 5D MKIII, Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens, available light.

Another nice series, Daniel! That old building is a great backdrop.

Thank you. Honestly it's probably one of my favorite locations that I've done a shoot in. Couldn't ask for a more interesting setting with better available lighting.

Unrestrained, multi-level huzzahs!

[ When I read "Illinois", then saw that first image with the bars—I did think, "Oh, Joliet"! ]

Another recently finished shot from this series. This one is similar to another in the set, but I like the lighting more.

Another recently finished shot from this set. I feel like it's been a long time since I've been able to shoot in a location with such interesting and dynamic available lighting. As a result I have so many images from this set with different and interesting lighting.

Interesting is better than boring, so thanks.

A great series Daniel. You were fortunate to find such a unique, well worn space with beautiful window light to use as your stage. Attention to small details like having your client wearing pants and shoes to match the decor are noted. I enjoyed all the varying poses you collaborated on with him to create different moods from athletic to balletic to pensive and introspective. Nice work.

Thank you so much Steve. Sadly the town he moved to has a growing number of abandoned structures, including this one. From the looks of it though, this one was abandoned a long time ago. We both had to acknowledge the risks of using such a location for a photo shoot before deciding to do so. I'm glad the photos turned out so well, but it's not a risk I'm often willing to take if I'm being completely honest. I do cherish the photos though; Vinnie has come a long way as a "model" since the first time I ever photographed him a few years ago.

I gotcha about the risks. There is a subculture of photographers who explore and photograph the interiors and exterior of abandoned buildings. Not for the faint of heart.

I definitely see the allure in it. When I saw the inside of this location I was practically beside myself with excitement about being able to do a photo shoot there. The lighting and the setting were just perfect.

Very evocative. There is something quite pensive about him.

Does he do any modeling aside from with you? He's posed very well

Thank you so much! The lighting was fairly easy to work with in this location. Getting the colors just right in post however was pretty difficult.

Usually he just models for me, and had not done any modeling before we had met. Vinnie did landscape and travel photography for a creative agency, and they needed photos of their photographer, so they hired me to photograph him and that's how we met and eventually became very close friends.
