I feed my squirrels an assortment of nuts to keep them plump and healthy from November to March and they are usually too big for the hawks to attack. The squirrels love the black oil seed mixed in with the bird seed. The Doves seem to be an easier and more abundant target. 
I was lucky he did not fly away when I setup the tripod and put my focus point on the red zone.
