p.1 #1 · Z9 noisy during shutter release with small apertures

This is an edge case, and was only discovered when my settings were WAY wrong after doing some astro and I hadn't adjusted back. When shooting at a small aperture, like f/22, there is a significant noise from within the lens when firing the shutter. I assume this is because the aperture blades are open during liveview/evf, close down for the exposure, and then reopen. This sound gets noisier the smaller the aperture/larger the F number goes.

It also coincides with a small amount of what I can only call "blackout" on the fringe of the EVF.

I've never seen this behavior before, as I'm normally shooting my zooms near wide open, so there's no aperture blade adjustment happening between liveview and the exposure.

Just curious if you've also heard/noticed this. It's very noticeable with the Z 100-400, less so with the 24-120. The only reason I noticed it is because the camera is typically dead quiet when shooting wide open.

Just tried it on my Z9 w/100-400, at f/22 I don’t get any more aperture noise compared to wide open, but I do get a brief flash of a blackout.

Thanks for the data Ross! Totally a non issue as it's not a normal use case at all, but just took me by surprise.

I can't reproduce the aperture noise on a 100-400 or 14-30. I don't have the 24-120 to try.

The Z bodies do not stop down further than F5.6 for the live EVF preview during normal shooting - beyond that, the Z9 does have to stop the lens down the rest of the way for every shot if it's smaller than F5.6, so if you're shooting at F22 then it will have to do that. The aperture travel is less though, assuming the lens is faster than F5.6, so there is still some benefit to that approach. The separate DOF preview function still works the same as a DSLR but that's beside the point.

DSLRs always focus wide open regardless of aperture, and stop down at the time of every shot. This is also why some bodies have their maximum FPS limited with certain lenses, and it's also why fitting a fast lens gave a noticeably brighter OVF experience. The Z bodies give you a live DOF preview but only up to F5.6, after which you need to use the actual DOF preview button to check it.

Off topic, but I'm curious... won't you lose sharpness due to diffraction at f/22 ?

Of course, but there are several edge cases where you might want to do it, like a long exposure without having an ND filter on you for example.

depending on post work

oh, and no lens noise from this setup.

Noticed it today with a macro lens in a quiet basement. Thought I'd accidentally enabled shutter sound, but no.

I think mechanical shutter noise would be louder than this aperture sound in any other camera, which is why I never noticed it before.

My shooting buddy has the Z9 and 24-120 f4 Z. The first Z9 shoot with him I could hear a click with every release of the shutter. I asked if he had shutter sound enabled and he said no, it is the aperture blades making the sound.
