p.1 #1 · Shadow Lake at -35c and 50km of Skiing - Banff National Park

On the weekend I skied into Shadow Lake. [There is a propane heated cabin there and they serve food if you miss sunrise and sunset ] It was only 14 km and 500m of elevation gain - but over the weekend it got down to -35c early morning and I skied a total of about 50km out and looking for the best spots.

I must admit, getting up at 7am in the cold and skiing to a prospect and holding my little M5 in my hand with a gorrilla-pod was numbing. And I did not feel much like lying on the ground to get a better reflection.

But it was a gorgeous weekend with spectacular weather, and I am posting my best 3 pictures of the weekend.

1-3 of 3

Comments and feedback are appreciated. I am trying my M5 to see if its good enough to save weight. If I (you) like these I might buy the M6II to save 2000grams and keep up with my buddies. If I did it again I would take a ball head for the gorilla-pod - I just about froze my fingers off getting the picture level. And after an hour of waiting on the first post, my hands were too cold and the battery went dead, and I could not wait any longer because I forgot my chemical hand warmers. It also needed an ND for improving the reflection but I was done.

Scott

That is some brutal cold and a lot of scouting work!

The first one is my favorite of the three, for what it's worth.

It was a bit cold, especially when you forget the chemical warmers and ball head. Glad you prefer 3. Much appreciated. Scott

Scott, you definitely deserve an A+ for braving the cold weather, -35! Beautiful location, the first image would be my favorite. Only nit would be that the images seems (at least on my phone) to have a slight blue cast to it. 👍🏻

Beautiful images Scott. Captured the essence of winter in the Canadian mountains. But to hear you say it was "only" 14km is pretty funny because 14km is plenty in my books!

I can't imagine shooting at that temperature. I always have problems with my hands, regardless of what gloves I use.
I want to like #1, but the composition is not working out so much. Maybe if you crop to 8x10 aspect ratio it would work better. #3 is nice.

Beautiful shots. Geez. That's a lot of skiing. I'll be in Banff and Jasper in two weeks for a week. But there's no way I'll have time to ski 14km.

Notice the face in the water of #1? Once you see it, you can't un-see it.

Killer images as always, as I always say! Congrats, and a pleasure to view. Regarding the little bit of Cyan (more greenish hues) in the left foreground snow of the first image, I would consider correcting more toward similar blueish hues that are on the right side and overall image. But great nonetheless!

keepclicking: I reduced the blue cast already but I guess not enough. A+ for effort is great. Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

MTGFender: Glad you like the pictures. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

dakel: 14 km in the cold with back country skis and skins took me 5 hours. But a younger person would likely cut off 2 hours. Sometimes I am jealous of the youth, but then I have the time - my kids are grown. Glad you like the images and the essence. Much appreciated. Scott

Jim Dockery: This is a relatively easy spot to get to. You should go. Glad you like 1. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

zuru: The composition in 1 was a struggle. First there was setting up the gorilla pod (need to bring ball head), then the cold, and lower would lose lake snow, and then I wanted to use nd to smooth water and my fingers would not work. all with my skis on .... lots of excuses .... So I just had to live with what I could get. I will try a different crop. Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Gregg B: Glad you like the shots. It was a beautiful day(s). Let me know if you need any advice. I usually go out Sunday, and could meet you somewhere. Lots of avalanche risk right now - so be careful. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

LovePG: Long underwear, pants, windbreak, 3 layers on upper, hood, belclava... the only challenge is the wind. It does not take much to freeze your nose. And the frozen fingers to adjust your camera or your skis. And then there is the ice that forms on your glasses if you lean over. But I love it. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

awhealler: I did notice it. I was wondering if anyone else would. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Mark Metternich: Thank you for the details suggestion on colour. Someday soon I shall take your processing course. I am still struggling after switching from aperture to LR. It is just awkward to have an efficient flow. Glad you like the first. Much appreciated. Scott

jcw1982: You are very encouraging. Glad you like the work. Much appreciated. Scott

Scott - I really like all three images. I can't imagine shooting for very long at those temps. My hands couldn't handle it. Frostbite residuals from many years ago. So I'm wowed by the fact that you even could do that. I particularly like #2 and #3 as I'm increasingly drawn to images of special landscapes that include people engaged with/in those landscapes. For me, the humans in the image are great entry points for the viewer and they provide a sense of scale that only increases the sense of awe I have when viewing these images. Different strokes for different folks but that's my take on it. Very, very well done! Steve
