Sonu,
Stunning set of photographs! Just awesome. Man that is so shitty that you lost your stuff at the GG. It is for this very reason that I unloaded everything in the hotel first before going out to GG, seen so many vids of smash and grab.

Thanks Sunny. Great to hear from you after long time.
Yeah it sucks. Lesson for the future. I underestimated the risk

Oof.

I'm behalf of San Francisco, I apologize for your experience, and I hope you at least got to keep the pictures.

Yes, the property crime wave here is insane, and the cops are doing absolutely nothing about it. People have broken into cars while the drivers are stopped at stop signs. Crooks have followed photographers home to their driveway and broken into the car before the driver got it. It's completely out of control.

I also have a camera insurance policy. I've heard crazy stories of not only theft, but lost luggage in taxis and airports, people dropping an entire backpack into the ocean, etc. With all this gear, a little peace of mind is nice.

Very nice pictures, and hope you were able to enjoy the rest of your trip.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I will be going with State Farm to insure my new equipment. Meanwhile my home insurance has covered most of the loss so I am thankful this is behind me. This happened on the last day of the trip when I was planning a sunset with the GG bridge (it was a gorgeous sunset lol) and luckily had my camera and lens on my person.

Speaking as a long-time Bay Area resident and one who has been going to SF for many purposes (including frequent street photography) for decades, and as a person who knows that a lot of the stuff about the "dangers" of SF is nonsense...

... I will confirm that I would not leave my camera gear in a car parked in the City or, for that matter, in other areas around SF. In fact, when we go to SF — which we do pretty frequently, and without problems — we avoid leaving our car parked on the street when possible. The one exceptional real-world crime problem in SF is car break-ins.

Sorry that you got hit by one!

I haven't read the entire thread, so apologies if what I write about insurance is redundant, but what many of us get is what I believe is referred to by the industry as "inland marine coverage." It is not part of the homeowners policy. We got ours through our NANPA membership, and it is a good policy, though it certainly can be pricey if you have a significant amount of equipment.

I hope you get to return to SF again in the future and that you have a better experience!

Speaking as a (once) long-time Bay Area resident and one who knows SF and the entire Bay Area very well, what G Dan says is nonsense. SF, once a great city, is now a sh!thole, literally and otherwise, a lavish buffet of crime, criminals, bums, drugs, needles, and excrement. Other than that it is heaven.

Behold the wonders of San Fransicko -

^^^May I recommend the services of Hyperbole Anonymous? ;-)

On the subject of Big Sur, I just read an article in one of our local newspapers about the current conditions down there. (It also included some of the historic background of the difficult construction and maintenance of that route. It is kind of amazing that the roadway exists at all.)

It is a beautiful place to photograph, and I'm fortunate live only about an hour away from the upper end of the Big Sur coast, so I get down there fairly frequently. (Not as frequent as the, uh, "shithole" of San Francisco visits, but I digress... ;-) I was just there to photograph a few days ago, traveling as far south as the Big Sur Bakery before turning around.

Right now a big portion of the route is closed. If I understand correctly, you aren't going to get much beyond Ragged Point from the south — which means you don't really get into the interesting parts at all. From the north the road is closed from near Deetjens, which isn't that far south of the town of Big Sur.

There are quite a few one-lane sections with traffic control for ongoing bridge work and for storm damage repair. I was surprised by the number of places where it looks like there could be more landslides. For example, right by the popular turnout for the tourist icon of Bixby Bridge, the slope on the north side of the road is super-muddy and draining copious water and mud on to the roadway.

On the plus side, because the route no longer goes through... the number of visitors is rather low, especially if you go on a weekday morning.

One more thing: I like the blue tonality of the Half Dome photograph. That amplifies the feeling of winter cold in that famous and iconic scene.
