I was thinking we should have a 35 Lux thread—every 35 Lux iteration. Thoughts? Enjoy your v2 Rich—my all time favorite lens!

Almost two months ago, I sent my 35 Lux reissue to Leica New Jersey since it was back-focusing, had sticky focusing action and wobbly aperture ring. Today I got a message stating that they don't have the parts to fix my lens and it was sent to Germany! What parts are needed to fix these minor issues with the lens?

That is a major disappointment! The 35 SR has become one of my favorites.

It's been a frustrating wait for my brand new Leica 35/1.4 Summilux Steel Rim which I sent in for a front-focusing repair. It's been almost 3 months now and I haven't received any updates from Leica, except for the fact that my lens ended up in Germany because the New Jersey repair facility didn't have the necessary tools to fix it. I've been reaching out for updates, but so far, no response.

On a brighter note, it looks like Leica has finally acknowledged the hard vignetting issue I reported when using the rounded hood with a filter. Here's their latest response:

________

Dear Fred,

Here is the official statement regarding the vignetting of the steel rim.

First, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. The Leica brand stands to a high degree for perfection and exceptional quality, and our customers can rightly expect the absolute reliability of our products.

The Leica Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 is equipped with a lens hood in a classic design. Since it is not possible to use it with today's filters, we decided to add another, modern lens hood to the scope of delivery to enable the simultaneous use of lens hood and filter.

Unfortunately, we found that this combination leads to undesirable vignetting. Leica lenses are known for their excellent image performance, we are extremely sorry that we did not live up to the Leica standard in this case.

We are already working diligently on a technical solution in the form of a newly designed lens hood. As soon as this is available, we will inform you and provide you with a replacement free of charge. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

We hope you will find this to be a satisfactory solution, as our customers and customers’ satisfaction are our top priority.

________

Fingers crossed that this gets resolved soon!

Wow, I'm impressed they're working on a new hood. Didn't expect that. I sure wish they could design it so that the hood went on first then the filter would screw into the inside of the hood.

It's almost shocking that they did not test this out before going to production. This is a very basic thing. Interestingly this lens was released with the new M6 - another product they apparently did not test out either.

I'm thinking Leica needs to hire Light Lens Lab as consultants to see how to re-release original designs...

It seems like they got a bit of a raw deal. None of the fancy-schmancy camera reviewers seem to have mentioned this little issue and when I started piping up about it, people were all like "meh, who cares?" Can you imagine?

To make matters worse, the issue with hard vignetting seems to be more pronounced when using Leica filters, as they are significantly thicker compared to other options on the market.

None of those reviewers mentioned the M6 scratching film either. And believe you me, mine is not the only one.

It literally is like they do not test the product before release.

Just wanted to give you an update on my Leica 35/1.4 Steel Rim lens. I had to send it in for repair because the focusing ring was a bit sticky, the aperture was wobbly, and the lens wasn't properly aligned with the RF. I ended up waiting for 3 months for the repair to be completed, but Leica surprised me by sending me a brand new lens instead!

It took a little longer than expected because my lens ended up in Germany and they're dealing with a backlog at the moment, but the good news is that the new lens is absolutely perfect! None of the issues from the first one, and I couldn't be happier.

Great news, Fred! I was on the fence about this lens due to reports such as yours, but this inspires confidence that they're addressing these early issues.

I absolutely adore this lens! It's definitely one of my favorites. However, I did hear that there were some QC issues with the first batch that came out.
Also, Leica has recognized the problem when using the threaded hood with a filter and is currently working on a new hood for the lens. They're even making sure that all previous owners receive a replacement soon. I'm really excited to see the improvements they make and can't wait to try it out myself.

Wish they would send me a brand new M6 (that works properly) instead of trying to fix my defective brand new one...
