I love the 35 steel rim reissue. Went to dinner downtown tonight and of course had my M10 with this lens that's usually on it.

Some argue that at f/1.4, the Leica Summilux ASPH produces both creamy bokeh and clinical sharpness, and I can't entirely disagree. However, I still appreciate the look.

I think that reviewer wrote a whole bunch of nonsense, especially this nugget:

I would not say this lens is not the best for film lovers because it is too sharp to give that natural film look (the subject will be too sharp, and the grain structure will be harsh)

The Leica 50 APO is sharper than the 50 Lux Asph and people freak out saying how incredible the APO is on film. As well as my direct experience using the Lux on film.

Also his parroting the claim that the Cron is sharper than the Lux? Again I have both and that is not the case. Also Lensrentals did a big 50 comparison test a few years ago and while the Leica APO ruled, the Lux 50 was significantly sharper than the Cron.

Don’t get me wrong I love my Cron v5, and use it more than my Lux Asph but that is because for me it is as sharp as
i need but more importantly I prefer the size and handling. I just love the shorter and lighter focus throw of the Cron v5.

Have you decided whether to always use the round hood with this lens, or do you prefer using the lens without a hood and just a filter? Sometimes I use the round hood for added protection, or the OLLUX hood (with a 43mm filter upside down inside the lens) just to add a cool look.

I've only been using a clear filter because something about the steel rim size/form makes me not want to use either hood, and it’s seems more stealth for street without it. Also I just don't see me scratching the filter. If I do, I'll replace it. On the other hand I used the hood on my 21/3.4 super elmar yesterday because I didn't buy a filter for it, and wasn't bothered by it, partly because I was shooting at a deserted train yard.

This thing is growing on me... I generally don't like "vintage" look lenses, but this one has a nice look to it. This is on my M11-P, wide open.

Just got my copy, produced in 07/23 and it came with the redesigned hood. Just want to ask here if anyone knows of any 3rd party lens cap that fits with the hood? (Not OLLUX)

Using it on film and would not want to burn through the shutter cloth when walking out and about during the day in bright condition. Appreciate the help!

Despite still somewhat suspect build quality (and mine is a brand new, recently built lens) I'm impressed how resistant it is to fringing, while offering that vintage glow. Here on M11-P, wide open:

Not much to be honest - started with Auto settings in Lightroom and just added contrast and regular highlights and shadows tweaks. The only real edit was to punch the saturation of warm colors to bring out the copper tones of The Vessel. Didn't touch the sky or the buildings - the glow is all straight from the Steel Rim (wide open here).

It's actually an accidental vertical pano of two shots - somehow I left my M11P in continuous mode and ended up taking two shots while moving the camera down. Stitched in Lightroom.

Focus was on The Vessel - I'm pretty impressed how sharp this lens is wide open considering the vintage formula. Although at portrait distances it gives a softer rendering.
