Last night a few of my friends came over to drink some ciders and hang out, and as usual I convinced one of them to let me dress them and sit for some portraits. Caleb is someone who doesn't see himself as photogenic. Obviously I disagree. I think he's very handsome and has an intensity that translates really well into a portrait. I love photographing my friends more than anything or anyone else. Not only are the photos special to me, but seeing them have an emotional response to the photos because they make them feel good about themselves means a lot to me.
These were lit using a single Neewer S101-400 with a 24 inch octabox, and photographed using a Canon 5D MKIII with a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens and a Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 lens. The backdrop is a cheap cloth backdrop I got on Amazon for $35, and honestly I'm surprised with how much I'm liking it for studio portraits.
I really like the horizontal (#1). I like the broad Rembrandt lighting on both. I think that relationship you have with your subjects comes through in your portraits. I always enjoying seeing your work.
Daniel, The expression in #1 with the highlight to shadow ratio of #2 would have been perfection - IMO. Otherwise, they are two excellent, beautifully lit portraits.

Thank you. The horizontal one was my favorite one from the shoot; I feel like that one really showcases some feeling and connection .

Thanks James. I agree with you. Caleb had leaned a bit in towards the light in that shot, but regardless I still feel that shot was the best of the bunch.
I also think he's very handsome and has an intensity that translates really well into a portrait.
These portraits stand out to me because of their simplicity. You've encouraged that handsomeness and intensity to speak for themselves, and the result is amazing!

Thank you so much! I love me some complicated lighting setups, but my favorite shots alway tend to be the simplest ones. I like the strong focus that a single light puts directly on the features of a portrait subject.
Your lighting, etc., is close to the look I enjoy for men. I tend to use two lights a lot, but your samples have me curious to add more one light photos when I shoot portraits again indoor.
I used to have a 5D mk ii and a 5D mk iii. I'm curious if you've tried the 5DS R. The controls are mostly identical to the 5D mk iii.
