It wasn't well promoted/priced and similar to the D7500 they took away vertical grip functionality which was a mistake; the D780 does have 2 memory slots though.
I like mine and bought it used December 2020 for like ~$1790.
The only improvements it could do with would be vertical grip functionality and live view auto focus improvements which aren't needed but would be nice and I'm hopeful the Z6III checks all of those boxes but upgrading to that or Z9 would be more of a luxury instead of a need.
I'd think that 24mp dslr is pretty general purpose. Had to post this Ken really likes his

I watched/listened to Ken's review and I appreciated what he had to say. He's an acquired taste obviously, but I felt his assessment was pretty good.
Now that Nikon has a 48 hour 0% financing for 24 months option on all gear, I'm debating between a D780, or a Z6II and Z 70-200 f/2.8. I'm even considering buying the lens before I have a Z body, in advance of the Z6III.
If I go with the D780, I'd still have to acquire the F mount 70-200 as I've only rented it previously. But between the D780, my D750, and the D850, I bet I'd have my FX bases covered for 10 years. Other than the desire for many of the features mirrorless offers, but DSLRs don't.
I have to agree that after shooting only Fuji cameras for the last 5 years it was actually pretty nice to hold and shoot with a "real" camera -I like mine a lot more than the last Nikon I had, which was the D610.
I'll also probably always keep a small Fuji kit, maybe just a body a 3 tiny primes just to keep a toe in the mirrorless world

My understanding is that the AF in AF-D lenses will not work with the FTZ adapter. Due to the fact that I had a ton of AF-D lenses with my D750, when it came time to move to mirrorless I went with Canon (their EF/RF adapter does focus all older EF lenses on any of their new R series bodies).
p.s. Had I gone with Nikon it would have cost me way more because I would have had to buy new lenses. Since I already owned some EF lenses it was more cost effective for me.
